High-pressure stability and compressibility ofAPO4(A=La, Nd, Eu, Gd, Er, and Y) orthophosphates: An x-ray diffraction study using synchrotron radiati…

2010

Room-temperature angle-dispersive x-ray diffraction measurements on zircon-type ${\text{YPO}}_{4}$ and ${\text{ErPO}}_{4}$, and monazite-type ${\text{GdPO}}_{4}$, ${\text{EuPO}}_{4}$, ${\text{NdPO}}_{4}$, and ${\text{LaPO}}_{4}$ were performed in a diamond-anvil cell up to 30 GPa using neon as pressure-transmitting medium. In the zircon-structured oxides we found evidence of a reversible pressure-induced structural phase transformation from zircon to a monazite-type structure. The onset of the transition is at 19.7 GPa in ${\text{YPO}}_{4}$ and 17.3 GPa in ${\text{ErPO}}_{4}$. In ${\text{LaPO}}_{4}$ a nonreversible transition is found at 26.1 GPa and a barite-type structure is proposed for …

Microfluidic Synthesis of Highly Shape-Anisotropic Particles from Liquid Crystalline Elastomers with Defined Director Field Configurations

2011

In this article, we present the synthesis of highly shape-anisotropic, micrometer-sized particles from liquid crystalline elastomers, which have the ability to reversibly change their shape in response to a certain external stimulus. For their preparation, we utilized a microfluidic setup. We succeeded in preparing sets of particles with differing degrees of shape anisotropy in their ground state including highly anisotropic fiber-like objects. All samples produced movement during the phase transition from the nematic to the isotropic phase of the liquid crystal. Depending on the direction of this shape change, we classified the samples in two groups. One type showed a contraction, while th…

Predictive Power of the Emissivity Angular Variation of Soils in the Thermal Infrared (8–14 <inline-formula> <tex-math notation="LaTeX">$…

2018

A confident knowledge of land surface emissivity at viewing zenith angles far from nadir is of prime interest to perform an accurate correction of the anisotropy effect in the measurements made by orbiting thermal infrared (TIR) sensors. It is also important for the correct treatment of angular measurements carried out by remote sensors such as AATSR/ENVISAT, MODIS/Terra–Aqua, or the recently launched SLSTR/Sentinel-3, which can also be used for the angular normalization of land surface temperature due to viewing geometry effect. In this letter, the anisotropy of TIR emissivity predicted by two analytical, Warren–Wiscombe–Dozier and Hapke, models based on Mie diffraction theory was compared…

<title>Theoretical and experimental studies of light diffraction anisotropy by holograms in a-As-S-Se films</title>

2003

Diffraction anisotropy (DA) defined as the polarization dependence of the amplitudes (amplitude DA) and phases (phase DA) of the diffracted light waves is studied in the case of a sinusoidal transmission amplitude-phase grating both theoretically and experimentally. Theoretical analysis was mainly based on the Kogelnik's coupled wave theory (KCWT) and also on the conclusions of rigorous coupled wave theory (RCWT) and effective medium theory (EMT). Experimentally gratings with 0.42 μm period in a-As-S-Se films at 632.8 nm were studied. KCWT predictions were compared with those of RCWT and EMT as well as with the experimental DA results. It is found that KCWT properly describes the first orde…

Polarization holograms and diffraction anisotropy in amorphous chalcogenides

2004

Polarization hologram recording based on the effect of photoinduced anisotropy (PA) is reviewed, focusing on amorphous chalcogenides (ACh). Possible PA mechanisms in ACh are considered. Polarization holographic grating recording in amorphous As?S?Se (a-As?S?Se) films is experimentally studied and analysed in comparison with scalar recording. It is holographically established that linearly polarized 632.8 nm light produces photoinduced anisotropy and the chalcogen related D+, D? centre reorientation and generation mechanism is proposed. It is used to explain the observed peculiarities of polarization (vector) recording in comparison with scalar recording based on photoinduced structural chan…

STRUCTURE AND MAGNETIC PROPERTIES OF COBALT FERRITE PARTICLES PRODUCED BY METHOD OF PYROLYTIC SYNTHESIS

2008

ABSTRACT Magnetic fine particles of cobalt ferrite have been prepared by method of pyrolytic synthesis. X-ray diffraction confirmed the formation of single-phase cobalt ferrite nanoparticles in the range 6–50 nm. The size of the particles varies depending on matrix dispersity and mass content in the organic precursors. A large coercivity observed to be small for smaller single-domain particles due to superparamagnetic behavior.

High-pressure structural, elastic, and thermodynamic properties of zircon-type HoPO4 and TmPO4

2017

[EN] Zircon-type holmium phosphate (HoPO4) and thulium phosphate (TmPO4) have been studied by single-crystal x-ray diffraction and ab initio calculations. We report on the influence of pressure on the crystal structure, and on the elastic and thermodynamic properties. The equation of state for both compounds is accurately determined. We have also obtained information on the polyhedral compressibility which is used to explain the anisotropic axial compressibility and the bulk compressibility. Both compounds are ductile and more resistive to volume compression than to shear deformation at all pressures. Furthermore, the elastic anisotropy is enhanced upon compression. Finally, the calculation…

Domain shapes and monolayer structures of triple-chain phospholipids on water

1994

Two triple-chain phospholipid isomers were investigated at the air-water interface by means of fluorescence microscopy and grazing incidence X-ray diffraction (GID). The two lipids differ only in the position of the branched chain at the glycerol backbone. Fluorescence microscopy shows different domain sharp-edged domains. In the case of dendritic domains the chains are more tilted, the deviation from hexagonal symmetry is more pronounced and hence the lattice anisotropy is larger.

Morphology and structures in double-, triple- and quadruple-chain phospholipid monolayers at the air/water interface

2007

The structure of double-, triple- and quadruple-chain phospholipid monolayers has been studied by Synchrotron x-ray diffraction. The double-chain mixed- linkage species exhibit an oblique structure at all pressures investigated. The triple-chain phospholipids show at lower lateral pressures a rectangular unit cell with a phase transition at higher pressures to a hexagonal packing of vertically arranged chains. The quadruple- chain lipid exhibits only the hexagonal phase structure. The position of the ether linkage and of the branched chain on the glycerol backbone has also a strong influence on the monolayer structures. Fluorescence microscopy shows different domain shapes for the different…

Anisotropic exchange coupling in the Keggin derivative K8[Co2(D2O)(W11O39)] · n D2O

1998

Abstract 20 g of the fully deuterated title compound have been prepared in polycrystalline form and investigated by inelastic neutron scattering using both thermal and cold neutrons. Magnetic dimer excitations were observed and the energy-splitting pattern resulting from the exchange coupling within the Co 2+ dimer was determined. The coupling is highly anisotropic with the parameter values J =−2.24 meV and η =0.33 based on the effective coupling Hamiltonian H =−2J[S 1z S 2z +η(S 1x S 2x +S 1y S 2y )] . The anisotropy results mainly from the single-ion anisotropy of the Co 2+ ion in the distorted octahedral coordination.
