Digital demodulation for fast set-up of sensorless PMSM electrical drives based on magnetic anisotropy

2009

This paper presents a demodulation algorithm applied to the sensorless control of permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSM). The sensorless control technique reported in this paper is based on the injection of high frequency voltages to the stator so that the motor currents contain information on the rotor position. This information is then extracted by an appropriate demodulation technique. The presented demodulation algorithm is based on spectral analysis of the signal produced by the sensorless control technique because this is fully characterized and presents not ambiguous correlation between current harmonic content and rotor position. The most important feature of the demodulation al…

Collisional shifting and broadening coefficients for the rovibrational anisotropic S(J) lines of nitrogen studied by inverse Raman spectroscopy

1996

0377-0486; Line shifting and broadening coefficients of the anisotropic S(J) lines (v = 0, J --> v = 1, J + 2) of the nitrogen molecule were measured at room temperature using high-resolution stimulated Raman spectroscopy. A rotational quantum number dependence of the S(J) line shifts was observed. In order to avoid an asymmetry of experimental origin, a suitable theoretical profile was fitted to the experimental lineshapes. This study allows the testing of the theoretical methods for calculating the line broadening coefficients in anisotropic Raman scattering, which have already been used in the analysis of infrared absorption data. The behaviour of the modified sum rule and the RPA (rando…

From single fiber to macro-level mechanics: A structural finite-element model for elastomeric fibrous biomaterials

2014

In the present work, we demonstrate that the mesoscopic in-plane mechanical behavior of membrane elastomeric scaffolds can be simulated by replication of actual quantified fibrous geometries. Elastomeric electrospun polyurethane (ES-PEUU) scaffolds, with and without particulate inclusions, were utilized. Simulations were developed from experimentally-derived fiber network geometries, based on a range of scaffold isotropic and anisotropic behaviors. These were chosen to evaluate the effects on macro-mechanics based on measurable geometric parameters such as fiber intersections, connectivity, orientation, and diameter. Simulations were conducted with only the fiber material model parameters a…

Feeding ecology and chewing mechanics in hoofed mammals: 3D tribology of enamel wear.

2013

11 pages; International audience; Large herbivorous mammals have evolved chewing systems capable of processing a large variety of structurally diverse foods. Three-dimensional (3D) surface texture parameters are applied to investigate wear mechanisms related to tooth morphology, food source, and chewing dynamics. We tested 46 industrial 3D surface texture parameters for their capability to robustly indicate specific biomechanics in two grazing (Blue Wildebeest and Grevy's Zebra) and two browsing (Giraffe and Black Rhinoceros) ungulate mammals. These species inhabit sub-Saharan Africa and represent foregut and hindgut fermenters. The results did not indicate a wavelength threshold that can c…

The mapping properties of the radiosity operator along an edge

2002

In this article we study the radiosity operator along an edge between two adjacent half-planes. First we show that the radiosity operator is invertible in a whole scale of anisotropic Sobolev spaces. In the absence of any shadows we are able to derive regularity properties of the solution, which depend only on the angle between the half-planes, the reflectivity coefficients and the right-hand side. This work can be considered as a supplement to the article of Rathsfeld (Mathematical Methods in the Applied Sciences 1999; 22: 217–241). Copyright © 2002 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Synthesis and characterization of a new family of bi-, tri-, tetra-, and pentanuclear ferric complexes.

2004

Nine members of a new family of polynuclear ferric complexes have been synthesized and characterized. The reaction of Fe(O(2)CMe)(2) with polydentate Schiff base proligands (H(2)L) derived from salicylidene-2-ethanolamine, followed in some cases by reaction with carboxylic acids, has afforded new complexes of general formulas [Fe(2)(pic)(2)(L)(2)] (where pic(-) is the anion of 2-picolinic acid), [Fe(3)(O(2)CMe)(3)(L)(3)], [Fe(4)(OR)(2)(O(2)CMe)(2)(L)(4)], and [Fe(5)O(OH)(O(2)CR)(4)(L)(4)]. The tri-, tetra-, and pentanuclear complexes all possess unusual structures and novel core topologies. Mössbauer spectroscopy confirms the presence of high-spin ferric centers in the tri- and pentanuclear…

Inferring rheology and geometry of subsurface structures by adjoint-based inversion of principal stress directions

2020

SUMMARY Imaging subsurface structures, such as salt domes, magma reservoirs or subducting plates, is a major challenge in geophysics. Seismic imaging methods are, so far, the most precise methods to open a window into the Earth. However, the methods may not yield the exact depth or size of the imaged feature and may become distorted by phenomena such as seismic anisotropy, fluid flow, or compositional variations. A useful complementary method is therefore to simulate the mechanical behaviour of rocks on large timescales, and compare model predictions with observations. Recent studies have used the (non-linear) Stokes equations and geometries from seismic studies in combination with an adjoi…

Seismic properties across an amphibolite- to greenschist-facies strain gradient (Neves area, eastern Alps, Italy): New considerations for shear zone …

2021

Abstract Detecting the presence and geometry of crustal shear zones by geophysical methods relies on our understanding of the intrinsic parameters controlling the seismic properties of these deformed rocks, over the range of pressure-temperature conditions expected in the Earth's crust. To this end, we aimed to track changes in P-wave propagation velocity (VP), anisotropy (AVP) and S-wave splitting (AVS) across a natural shear zone using experimental and electron backscatter diffraction methods. Five samples were collected across a meter-scale shear zone developed under amphibolite- to greenschist-facies in the Neves metagranodiorite (Tauern Window, Eastern Alps). With increasing strain, se…

Seismic anisotropy and its impact on imaging the shallow Alpine Fault : an experimental and modeling perspective.

2020

The transpressional Alpine Fault in New Zealand has created a thick shear zone with associated highly anisotropic rocks. Low seismic velocity zones (LVZ) and high seismic reflectivity are recorded in the Alpine Fault Zone, but no study has explored the underlying physical rock parameters of the shallow crust that control these observations. Protomylonites are the volumetrically dominant lithology of the fault zone. Here we combine experimental measurements of P‐wave speeds with numerical models of elastic wave anisotropy of protomylonite samples to explore how the fault zone can be seismically imaged. Numerical models that account for the porosity‐free real samples' fabric elastic tensors f…

Effect of the mineralogical composition on the elastoplastic hydromechanical response of Opalinus Clay shale

2021

Abstract Opalinus Clay is the shale currently under investigation as the host formation for geological radioactive waste disposal in Switzerland. Its hydromechanical response has been widely studied, and the experimental results show a range of values whose dispersion needs to be clarified. This work aims to explain the dispersion in the literature results by correlating the hydro-mechanical response to the mineralogical variability of the tested specimens . Based on published microstructural studies, the Opalinus Clay shale is herein schematised as a sequence of two kinds of layers: the shaly (high in clay-mineral content) and the sandy (low in clay-mineral content) layers. The mineralogic…
