Eurhomalea exalbida (Bivalvia): A reliable recorder of climate in southern South America?

2012

Abstract Due to the lack of suitable high-resolution archives, regional and continental-scale climate dynamics of southern South America are not well understood. Shells of the long-lived, shallow-marine bivalve mollusk, Eurhomalea exalbida (Dillwyn), are likely to contain information on the past water temperatures. As yet, however, no rigorous calibration study has been presented so that growth history traits and the reliability of shell oxygen isotope-based temperature estimates remain unknown. Shell growth patterns and oxygen isotope ratios of four young specimens of E. exalbida from the Falkland Islands (Southwest Atlantic) were analyzed and cross-calibrated with environmental parameters…

Investigations on the phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase activity of spruce needles relative to the occurrence of novel forest decline

1991

Summary Investigations were carried out on phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase (PEPC) activity in needles of Norway spruce trees [ Picea abies (L.) Karst.] at two natural sites during the course of three vegetation periods. PEPC activity found in needles of damaged trees was considerably higher than in needles of undamaged trees. Annual average figures varied up to 100%. The positive correlation between PEPC activity and the extent of damage of the investigated needles indicates a significant relationship between both parameters: the PEPC activity in spruce needles seems to be not only a qualitative, but also a quantitative indicator of the extent of damage. Higher PEPC activity in needles of d…

PERTUMBUHAN LINGKARAN POHON JATI PADA DUA SISTEM KULTUR BERBEDA DI JAWA TIMUR

2008

<p><em>Study dendrochronology or tree-ring dating is defined as the study of chronological sequence of annual growth rings in trees. Teak (Tectona grandis) is one of various tree species that has been identified for the use of tree-ring studies in tropical regions. Teak is found to be suitable for dendrochronology as it is long-lived and develops defined annual growth rings. In Java, teak cans growth naturally or intensively in plantation. The two silviculture conditions will give different sensitivity on climate effect. Therefore, the effect of silviculturer will on natural teak and plantation teak in Saradan, Madiun, and East Java. As a part of the study, ten core samples from…

The Valencia Port Authority (VPA): environmental information in the annual report

2012

In recent years, most companies are participating in the disclosing of information on the impact of their potential activities on the environment. In 2002, Spain developed its legislation on environmental information in annual reports. The port industry has a potential environmental and economic impact. In this context, it is important to know how it disclosure environmental information in the annual reports. The case of study shows the disclosure information characteristics of Valencia Port Authority (VPA) and the relationships with the environment. The results concluded that VPA has adapted its information not only the standards but as a mean of legitimation.

Organic chlorine compounds in lake sediments. II Organically bound chlorine

1990

Abstract Organically bound chlorine together with inorganic chloride was measured from dated bottom sediment layers of 18 lakes in Central Finland and compared to organic matter contents. Pulp mills were found to be the source of significant increase of the accumulation of all of these materials in the 20th century.

Evidence for a link between the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation and annual asthma mortality rates in the US

2019

AbstractAn association between climatic conditions and asthma mortality has been widely assumed. However, it is unclear whether climatic variations have a fingerprint on asthma dynamics over long time intervals. The aim of this study is to detect a possible correlation between climatic indices, namely the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation and Pacific Decadal Oscillation, and asthma mortality rates over the period from 1950 to 2015 in the contiguous US. To this aim, an analysis of non-stationary and non-linear signals was performed on time series of US annual asthma mortality rates, AMO and PDO indices to search for characteristic periodicities. Results revealed that asthma death rates evalu…

Population dynamics of oxiclinal species in lake Arcas-2 (Spain)

1995

‘Oxiclinal’ rotifer species show high concentrations just above the oxic-anoxic interface in the hypolimnion of some lakes. The stratification of their populations is best shown by sampling at close depth intervals and quantifying their densities by the Utermohl technique. With this technique we were able to count males which otherwise pass through filters and more accurately count egg production. We evaluated female, male and egg numbers of the two main oxiclinal species of lake Arcas-2: Filinia hofmanni and Anuraeopsis fissa, during two annual cycles (1990–91). F. hofmanni was an exclusive oxiclinal species. It had an exponential growth phase at the onset of stratification giving a distin…

How publicly quoted family business organizational behavior reflects financial crisis : a content analysis of the annual reports from 2008 to 2011

2012

The aim in this research is to analyze the strategic reactions the entrepreneurs in public traded family business take towards the global financial crisis. It is mainly based on a bilateral contextual structure: the internal context concerns the Entrepreneurial Orientation (EO) five-dimension theoretical framework (Lumpkin & Dess, 1996) under family business background; the external con-text refers to the global financial crisis as a macro environment. Hence, the re-search question can be concluded as “how the entrepreneurs in large publicly traded family firm organizational behavior, named EO, reflects the global financial crisis?” Furthermore, during the analysis process, several assumpti…

Rumicetum palustris (TIMÁR 1950) W. FISCHER 1978, new plant community from Bidentetea tripartiti R. Tx., LOHM. ET Prsg 1950 class in SW Poland

2016

Natural water reservoirs are very valuable floristic sites in Poland. Among them, the most important for preservation of biodiversity of plant communities are lakes, rivers, oxbow lakes and fishponds. The long-term process of human pressure on habitats of this type caused disturbance to their biological balance. Changes in the water regime, industrial development and chemisation of agriculture, especially in the period of last two hundred years, led to systematic disappearance of localities of many plant communities. Rumicetum palustris (Timár 1950) W. Fischer 1978, of Bidentetea tripartiti R. Tx., Lohm. et Prsg 1950 class, has been described for the first time in Hungary and Germany. This …
