Molecular scale structure and dynamics at an ionic liquid/electrode interface.

2017

After a century of research, the potential-dependent ion distribution at electrode/electrolyte interfaces is still under debate. In particular for solvent-free electrolytes such as room-temperature ionic liquids, classical theories for the electrical double layer are not applicable. Using a combination of in situ high-energy X-ray reflectivity and impedance spectroscopy measurements, we determined this distribution with sub-molecular resolution. We find oscillatory charge density profiles consisting of alternating anion- and cation-enriched layers at both cathodic and anodic potentials. This structure is shown to arise from the same ion-ion correlations dominating the liquid bulk structure.…

Recent developments with microchannel-plate PMTs

2017

Abstract Microchannel-plate (MCP) PMTs are the favored photon sensors for the DIRC detectors of the PANDA experiment at FAIR. Until recently the main drawback of MCP-PMTs were serious aging effects which led to a limited lifetime due to a rapidly decreasing quantum efficiency (QE) of the photo cathode (PC) as the integrated anode charge (IAC) increased. In the latest models of PHOTONIS and Hamamatsu an innovative atomic layer deposition (ALD) technique is applied to overcome these limitations. During the last five years comprehensive aging tests with ALD coated MCP-PMTs were performed and the results were compared to tubes treated with other techniques. The QE in dependence of the IAC was m…

Fuel Cell Performances of Bio-Membranes Made of Chitosan-Polyelectrolyte Thin Films and Nanowires into Anodic Alumina Membranes

2012

Chitosan (CS) / Phosphotungstic acid (PTA) polyelectrolytes in the shape of thin films and nanowires supported by Anodic Alumina Membranes (AAM) have been fabricated through solution cast and filtration techniques, respectively. Their ability to function in a H2/O2 fuel cell under mild conditions (room temperature, low humidity and low Pt loading) is proved for the first time. The fabricated membrane electrode assemblies produce power peaks of ~20 mW cm-2 for both films and nanowires. The CS/PTA films (20-40 μm thick) are able to produce a quite constant power density of ~10 mW cm-2 recorded for at least 7 h. The gradual decrease of the power output with time observed for CS/PTA nanowires i…

Metallic interconnects for solid oxide fuel cell: Effect of water vapour on oxidation resistance of differently coated alloys

2009

International audience; The need of interconnect to separate fuel and oxidant gasses and connect individual cells into electrical series in a SOFC stack appears as one of the most important point in fuel cell technology. Due to their high electrical and thermal conductivities, thermal expansion compatibility with the other cell components and lowcost, ferritic stainless steels (FSS) are nowconsidered to be among the most promising candidate materials as interconnects in SOFC stacks. Despite the formation at 800 ◦C of a protective chromia Cr2O3 scale, it can transform in volatile chromium species, leading to the lost of its protectiveness and then the degradation of the fuel cell. A previous…

Electron transfer mechanism in Shewanella loihica PV-4 biofilms formed at graphite electrode

2012

Abstract Electron transfer mechanisms in Shewanella loihica PV-4 viable biofilms formed at graphite electrodes were investigated in potentiostat-controlled electrochemical cells poised at oxidative potentials (0.2 V vs. Ag/AgCl). Chronoamperometry (CA) showed a repeatable biofilm growth of S. loihica PV-4 on graphite electrode. CA, cyclic voltammetry (CV) and its first derivative shows that both direct electron transfer (DET) mediated electron transfer (MET) mechanism contributes to the overall anodic (oxidation) current. The maximum anodic current density recorded on graphite was 90 μA cm − 2 . Fluorescence emission spectra shows increased concentration of quinone derivatives and riboflavi…

Sustainable electroorganic synthesis of lignin-derived dicarboxylic acids

2020

The oxidative ring opening of lignin-derived alkylated cyclohexanols to bio-based alkylated dicarboxylic acids is successfully performed by an electrocatalytic conversion. To establish this transformation as a green method, we developed a simple protocol for the anodic oxidation at nickel oxide-hydroxide (NiOOH) foam anodes in caustic soda in both a batch and flow electrolysis approach.

On the anti-inflammatory and anti-phospholipase A2 activity of extracts from lanostane-rich species

2000

Abstract We have studied extracts from three species rich in lanostane triterpenes for their activity against different in vivo models of inflammation induced by TPA, EPP and PLA2. The inhibitory effect against PLA2 in vitro was also studied. When the Poria cocos extract was tested against PLA2-induced mouse paw edema, it was active by the oral and parenteral routes. Its effect was greater in both magnitude and duration than that of Pistacia terebinthus and Ganoderma lucidum extracts. P. terebinthus was effective against chronic and acute inflammation, and according to a preliminary chromatographic analysis, its seems to be a good source of lanostane anti-inflammatory agents. G. lucidum was…

Electrical Characterization of CdTe pixel detectors with Al Schottky anode

2014

Abstract Pixelated Schottky Al/p-CdTe/Pt detectors are very attractive devices for high-resolution X-ray spectroscopic imaging, even though they suffer from bias-induced time instability (polarization). In this work, we present the results of the electrical characterization of a (4×4) pixelated Schottky Al/p-CdTe/Pt detector. Current–voltage ( I–V ) characteristics and current transients were investigated at different temperatures. The results show deep levels that play a dominant role in the charge transport mechanism. The conduction mechanism is dominated by the space charge limited current (SCLC) both under forward bias and at high reverse bias. Schottky barrier height of the Al/CdTe con…
