Is the selective information processing of food and body words specific to patients with eating disorders?

1993

The selective processing of food- and body size-related information was investigated using a modified version of the Stroop task. Anorexic and bulimic patients and matched female controls were compared on the basis of categorical (diagnosis), dimensional (restraint and drive for thinness) criteria, or both. The findings suggest that the phenomenon assessed by the Stroop paradigm is not exclusive to patients with a clinical eating disorder, but patients and those control subjects who are restrained eaters with a high drive for thinness share a selective processing of information related to shape and eating. The discussion focuses on the implications of these findings. © 1993 by lohn Wiley & …

Clinical features of the impact of eating disorders on the results of 13C-methacetin breath test for assessment of liver function in girls with anore…

2019

Introduction: This study was designed to assess the influence of chosen aspects of anorexia nervosa eating disorders (AN ED) on 13C-methacetin breath test (MBT) results. Material and methods: We investigated a group of 81 girls, including 41 patients with confirmed diagnosis of AN ED. The study group was divided in two subgroups. According to the DSM-5 classification, 25 underweight patients met the criteria of anorexia nervosa (AN), and 16 girls with BMI value > 5th percentile for age and sex were diagnosed as atypical anorexia nervosa (AAN). Laboratory tests assessing the liver function and the MBT were performed in all the participants of the study. Results: In all healthy females the va…

What happens in the course of body exposure?

2007

Abstract Objective Though body exposure seems to enhance outcome in cognitive-behavioural therapy of anorexia and bulimia nervosa, the underlying mechanisms are still unknown. Methods Participants with eating disorders (ED; n = 21) and normal controls (NC; n = 28) were exposed to their own bodies in front of a mirror for 40 minutes under standardized conditions. Emotions, cognitions, and saliva cortisol were assessed every 10 minutes during body exposure. Heart rate and skin conductance were recorded continuously. Results ED showed higher negative emotional and cognitive responses to body exposure compared to NC, whereas no group differences were found for physiological reactions. In the co…

Altered brain levels of arachidonic acid-derived inflammatory eicosanoids in a rodent model of anorexia nervosa

2019

Increasing evidence underline the role of inflammation in the behavioral, emotional and cognitive dysregulations displayed in anorexia nervosa (AN). Among the inflammatory mediators acting at both peripheral and central levels, growing attention receives a class of lipids derived from arachidonic acid (AA), called eicosanoids (eiCs), which exert a complex, multifaceted role in a wide range of neuroinflammatory processes, peripheral inflammation, and generally in immune system function. To date, little is known about their possible involvement in the neurobiological underpinnings of AN. The present study evaluated whether the activity-based model of AN (ABA) may alter AA-metabolic pathways b…

Epidemiology and risk factors of eating disorders: A two-stage epidemiologic study in a Spanish population aged 12-18 years

2003

Objective The authors studied the prevalence rates of eating disorders (ED) and their risk factors in a Spanish population aged 12–18 years. Method A two-stage epidemiologic study was conducted in the province of Valencia. Educational centers, classrooms, and individuals were selected randomly. The initial sample comprised 544 subjects. During Stage 1, subjects were screened with the 40-item Eating Attitude Test and a sociodemographic questionnaire that evaluates risk factors. During Stage 2, a semistandardized clinical interview was conducted with each participant. A random control group was paired by class, age, and sex. Comorbid psychiatric disorders and partial and subclinical forms wer…

Online guided self-help to augment standard treatment for people with anorexia nervosa: feasibility, efficacy and process measures

2021

Background: There is mounting evidence on the effectiveness of guided self-help (GSH) interventions to augment, shorten or replace standard care for eating disorders (EDs). However, only few studies have tested the use of GSH for people with anorexia nervosa (AN). Aims: 1) to conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis of GSH in AN, with a focus on clinical outcomes and feasibility; 2) to evaluate the feasibility, acceptability and efficacy of a novel digital GSH intervention for AN (RecoveryMANTRA) tested in addition to treatment as usual (TAU) in the outpatient setting, 3) to assess predictors of drop-out from the RecoveryMANTRA + TAU condition; 4) to establish the role of working allia…

Congenital generalized hypertrichosis: the skin as a clue to complex malformation Syndromes.

2015

Hypertrichosis is defined as an excessive growth in body hair beyond the normal variation compared with individuals of the same age, race and sex and affecting areas not predominantly androgen-dependent. The term hirsutism is usually referred to patients, mainly women, who show excessive hair growth with male pattern distribution. Hypertrichosis is classified according to age of onset (congenital or acquired), extent of distribution (generalized or circumscribed), site involved, and to whether the disorder is isolated or associated with other anomalies. Congenital hypertrichosis is rare and may be an isolated condition of the skin or a component feature of other disorders. Acquired hypertri…
