Kontturi’s chapter focuses on two Swedish physicians reporting from London and Caribbean Swedish colony St. Barthélemy to Swedish medical college in 1798. The emphasis is on their participation in the global networks of colonial medicine, shaping and sharing medical information from colonies outside of Europe. Their reports show how they promoted the hybridisation of different medical cultures with their distinctly open-minded curiosity towards new information, which was in line with the old Linnaean tradition of scientific travelling. Coarse-graining dipolar interactions in simple fluids and polymer solutions: Monte Carlo studies of the phase behavior

In this paper we investigate the phase diagram of pure dipolar substances and their mixtures with short alkanes, using grand canonical Monte Carlo simulations of simplified coarse-grained models. Recently, an efficient coarse-grained model for simple quadrupolar molecules, based on a Lennard-Jones (LJ) interaction plus a spherically averaged quadrupolar potential, has been shown to be successful in predicting single-component and mixture phase diagrams. Motivated by these results, we investigate the phase diagrams of simple dipolar molecules (and their mixtures with alkanes) using a spherically averaged potential. Growing length scales in a supercooled liquid close to an interface

We present the results of molecular dynamics computer simulations of a simple glass former close to an interface between the liquid and the frozen amorphous phase of the same material. By investigating F_s(q,z,t), the incoherent intermediate scattering function for particles that have a distance z from the wall, we show that the relaxation dynamics of the particles close to the wall is much slower than the one for particles far away from the wall. For small z the typical relaxation time for F_s(q,z,t) increases like exp(Delta/(z-z_p)), where Delta and z_p are constants. Abstract This article explores the dynamics between language and identity categories and the boundaries produced in a changing multilingual, indigenous context in the Arctic region of Finland. In this moment of transition, indigenous multilingualism has high stakes.
