Technological change and wage premiums amongst high-skilled labour
2019
This study examines the impact of the steam engine, which produced wide and long-lasting economic growth from the 19th century to the early 20th century, on the wages of high-skilled seamen in the Swedish merchant maritime shipping industry. The analysis focuses on the years 1869–1914, which was a transition period during which traditional sailing ships were replaced by steam-powered vessels. The study shows that all high-skilled occupations received wage gains under steam technology. The evidence on wage polarization amongst the high-skill occupations remains subtle, although there is certain evidence that wage premiums vary by occupation. peerReviewed
Innovoinnin ja yritysten välisen palkkahajonnan yhteys Suomessa ja Ruotsissa
2017
Tässä tutkielmassa on tarkoituksena tarkastella yritysten välistä palkkahajontaa Suomen (1996-2014) ja Ruotsin (1997-2013) osalta toimialapaneelien avulla. Palkkahajonnalle haetaan selitystekijöitä innovaatiomäärän viivästetyistä indikaattoreista (t&k –intensiteetti sekä ICT-intensiteetti). Tutkielmassa arvioidaan tuottavuuteen ja sen hajontaan vaikuttavia tekijöitä sekä huomioidaan erityisesti viime vuosikymmeninä päätään nostaneen mikrotason dynamiikan eli ”luovan tuhon” vaikutus, jonka on tutkittu lisäävän toimialoilla yritysten heterogeenisyyttä. Tuottavuuden (ja tuottavuuspotentiaalin) lisäksi palkkaan vaikuttavat maakohtaiset palkansopimiskäytänteet, joita arvioidaan erityisesti tulki…
The roles of job and worker restructuring in aggregate wage growth dynamics
2019
We propose an approach for measuring and analyzing the dynamics of the standard aggregate wage growth of macro statistics with micro data. Our method decomposes the aggregate wage growth into the wage growth of job stayers and into various terms related to job and worker restructuring. This method produces explicit expressions with clear interpretations for the various restructuring components. Using comprehensive longitudinal employer–employee data, we study how job and worker restructuring influence the aggregate wage growth and its cyclicality. The results highlight the importance of drawing a sharp distinction between job and worker restructuring in the analysis of aggregate wage growth…
The effect of early career social capital on long-term income development in Finland
2020
PurposeIn this study, the authors examine whether social capital embedded in individuals' social networks is connected to employees' long-term income development in Finland.Design/methodology/approachAnalyses are based on 25–35-year-old employees from the Finnish Living Conditions Survey of 1994 combined with register data on earned incomes from 1995 to 2016. The authors used questions addressing the frequency of meeting parents or siblings, spending free time with co-workers and participation in associational, civic or other societal activities as measures of the extent of network capital. Ordered logistic model was used to examine whether the size and composition of social networks differ…

The wage curve and local monopsony power
2019
AbstractUsing longitudinal micro-data from Finland, a country with a geographically dispersed population and relatively long distances between local labor markets, this paper examines the responsiveness of the pay level to local unemployment conditions. In particular, this study tests the hypothesis that the pay level is more responsive to the unemployment level in less agglomerated and more remote regions as might be expected if employers have a higher degree of monopsony power in such regions. The results consistently suggest that the pay level is lower in localities with a higher unemployment level and, hence, provide strong support for the so-called wage curve hypothesis, which predicts…
