This dissertation comprises four empirical research articles that use personnel data from a large university and worker-level panel data from Finland to examine the determinants of wages, promotions and employee performance evaluations. The first article employs personnel data to examine the importance of worker output and job seniority as predictors of employee performance evaluations and promotions. The results suggest that better-performing employees – with output measured both in absolute terms and relative to peers – were more likely to be assigned higher performance grades and had a higher probability of being promoted to more complex jobs than their peers with similar characteristics…
Effects of rehabilitative psychotherapy on labour market success: Evaluation of a nationwide programme

Aims: Psychotherapy is a widely used treatment for mental disorders, but whether it also improves employment and other labour market outcomes remains inconclusive. This study examined the effectiveness of a nationwide subsidized psychotherapy programme using extensive register-based data. Methods: The sample consisted of individuals who applied for rehabilitative psychotherapy in Finland in 2009–2012 ( n = 35,083). One consequence of that has been paid work becoming more important in organizing third sector activities. However, empirical evidence detailing how much paid work has actually grown and what that means for employee well-being is rare. Therefore, this dissertation studies how paid work has increased in the Finnish third sector while also examining the situation of Finland’s third sector employee well-being in comparison to public and private sector employees. Tutkielma pyrkii valottamaan oikeuskäytännön valossa yrittäjän sekä sijoittajan mahdollisuutta vaikuttaa hänen tulolajien väliseen tulojen allokaatioon sekä tuoda esiin niitä keinoja, joita yrityksellä on käytettävissä henkilöstön palkitsemiseen normaalia palkanmaksua kevyemmin keinoin. Näkökulma on yrittäjä ja pk-yritys keskeinen keskittyen suomalaiseen verotukseen. Tässä tutkielmassa aluksi käydään läpi yleisimmät oikeudelliset tulkintaperiaatteet, keskeiset vero-oikeudelliset periaatteet sekä oikeusnormien ja tuomioistuinten päätösten keskinäinen suhde.
