Can we improve the birth weight prediction?: the effect of normal BMI using a multivariate model

Objective: The construction of a predictive model that improves the estimation of the fetal weight (EFW). Study Design: a comparative, descriptive study. One hundred forty pregnant women were recruited at two-stage sample in health department in Spain. They were classified in four groups depending on the pre-gestational BMI. Fetal weight at term was estimated by ultrasound at 33-35 weeks (EFW40w) by one gynecologist. The present study compared changes in muscle performance and anthropometric measures in young men performing resistance training (RT) programs composed of only multi joint (MJ) exercises, or with the addition of single joint (SJ) exercises (MJ+SJ). Twenty untrained men were randomized to MJ or MJ+SJ groups for 8 weeks. Both groups performed the same MJ exercises. The difference was that the MJ+SJ group added SJ exercises for upper and lower limbs. Participants were tested for 10 repetitions maximum (10RM), flexed arm circumference, and biceps and triceps skinfolds. Bichat's fat-pad: correlations with some anthropometric parameters.

SummaryThe primary aim of this investigation was to evaluate the relationship between Bichat's fat-pad volume, visualized by ultrasonography, and widely used anthropometric measurements, in 60 women and 13 men, ranging in weight from 57 to 124·5 kg. The body of Bichat's fat-pad was significantly correlated with all anthropometric parameters, although the correlation was much stronger with weight (r = 0·94, p < 0·0001, women; r = 0·85, p = 0·0003, men) and body mass index (BMI) (r = 0·94, p < 0·0001, women; r = 0·91, p < 0·0001, men).

Musculoskeletal capacity of middle-aged women and men in physical, mental and mixed occupations. A 3.5-year follow-up.

The musculoskeletal capacity of 44 women and 39 men, mean age 55.0 +/- 3.4 years, was studied at the beginning and end of a 3.5 year period. The measurements included anthropometrics, maximal isometric trunk flexion and extension strength, maximal isometric hand grip strength and back mobility. According to a job analysis the subjects were divided into three dominating work groups: physical, mental and mixed groups. The results showed significant changes in anthropometrics, maximal isometric muscle strength and in mobility. Segmental contribution to forces in vertical jump.

Performance of a vertical jump was analyzed with respect to the contribution of the different body segments to the forces acting on the whole body center of gravity. Both cinematograph and force-platform techniques were employed. The data disclosed that the take-off velocity in vertical jumps was caused by the different components as follows: knee extension 56%, plantar flexion 22%, trunk extension 10%, arm swing 10%, and head swing 2%. However, the average take-off velocity of the total performance (3.03 m/s) was only 76% from the theoretical maximum calculated from the segmental analyses.
