The modern concept of “nature” was born in the XVIIIth Century: a nature as object, submitted to man’s reason. A long traditon sees the origin of the modern notion of nature in the Greek phúsis. To go from phúsis invites us on the contrary to be critical towards the modern paradigm of a nature opposed to culture. Actually the domination of nature and the exploitation by man of what are for us “natural resources” is at the core of the ideological, economical and financial model imposed on us by neoliberal capitalism. During the XVIIth Century, particularly with Descartes, appeared the modern concept of nature: a nature as object submitted to the reason of man. Contrary to what is generally assumed, this « nature » as domain to be worked out by man does not depend on the Greek concept of phusis. It is not to be opposed either to the modern concept of « culture ». This paper focuses on ‘violence on unarmed people’ as the unifying theme that underlies the structure of the tragedy with an anthropopoietic function, what means to build up, by contrast, models of human and humanity.. All the three forms of violence against unarmed people, which can be singled out in the tragedy, are analyzed.
