This study aimed at the characterization of the antioxidant power of polyphenol extracts (PE) obtained from the algae Cystoseira foeniculacea (CYS) (Phaeophyta) and from the halophyte Halocnemum strobilaceum (HAL), growing in the solar saltworks of western Sicily (Italy), and at the evaluation of their anti-microfouling properties, in order to correlate these activities to defense strategies in extreme environmental conditions. Red Orange: Experimental Models and Epidemiological Evidence of Its Benefits on Human Health

In recent years, there has been increasing public interest in plant antioxidants, thanks to the potential anticarcinogenic and cardioprotective actions mediated by their biochemical properties. The red (or blood) orange (Citrus sinensis(L.) Osbeck) is a pigmented sweet orange variety typical of eastern Sicily (southern Italy), California, and Spain. In this paper, we discuss the main health-related properties of the red orange that include anticancer, anti-inflammatory, and cardiovascular protection activities. Thermo-oxidative resistant UHMWPE-based nanocomposites containing hybrid-nanoparticles based on natural anti-oxidants and carbon nanotubes

The use of natural antioxidants is an attractive way to formulate nanocomposites with extended durability and with potential applications in bio-medical field. In this work, Vitamin E (VE) in the form of α-tocopherol and Quercetin (Q) were physically immobilized onto multi-walled carbon nanotubes bearing covalently-linked long-chain alkyl ester groups (CNTs) and the resulting hybrids CNTs-VE and CNTs-Q were used to formulate thermo-oxidation stable ultra high molecular weight polyethylene based nanocomposites.
