Chemical composition and antimicrobial activity of the essential oil ofPhlomis ferruginea Ten. (Lamiaceae) growing wild in Southern Italy

The essential oil of aerial parts of Phlomis ferruginea (Lamiaceae), growing wild in Southern Italy, was obtained by hydrodistillation and analysed by GC and GC–MS. 60 compounds, representing 92.3% of the oil, were identified. The major components were β-caryophyllene (15.6%), hexadecanoic acid (12.8%), germacrene D (8.9%), caryophyllene oxide (6.7%) and α-thujone (5.5%). High pressure processing of food-grade emulsion systems: Antimicrobial activity, and effect on the physicochemical properties

Abstract The use of high pressure processing (HPP) for development of stable emulsion-based delivery systems has been recently increased. Under adequate conditions, application of high pressures modifies the functionality of protein and polysaccharide molecules and significantly promotes the emulsifying activities. Application of high pressures also modulates the emulsion microstructure without any destabilization and gelation of protein molecules. The lipid oxidation in HPP-treated emulsions can be accelerated, particularly with higher pressure levels, while the HPP utilization on emulsions in acidic conditions can highly inhibit the growth of spoilage and pathogenic microorganisms. Although silver is being extensively used in food or other applications as the key component to control microbial proliferation, many factors affecting its real potential are still unknown. In the present work, the presence of specific ligands or the contents in organic matter was correlated with silver speciation and its antibacterial performance. Silver was found to be only active in form of free silver ions (FSI). The presence of chloride ions produced an equilibrium of stable silver chloride complexes which were void of antimicrobial efficacy. As part of further investigations on the characterization of the ligand-induced conformational stabilization of peptides, two series of n-alkyldimethylsilyl bonded silicas have been prepared. In series A the n-alkyl chain length, n, of the bonded phase was varied between 1 and 20 carbon atoms at a constant ligand density. A simple technique based on doping polymers within situgenerated silver nanoparticles (Ag/PS films) has been developed. In particular, an antiseptic material has been prepared by dissolving silver 1,5-cyclooctadiene-hexafluoroacetylacetonate in amorphous polystyrene, and the obtained solid solution has been heated for ca. 10 s at a convenient temperature (180°C). Abstract This study reports for the first time about the formulation, morphology, water barrier and the antimicrobial activity of high and low molecular weight chitosonium-acetate based solvent-cast blends with ethylene–vinyl alcohol (EVOH) copolymers. The blends based on the low molecular weight chitosan grade showed enhanced phase morphology, transparency, enhanced water barrier properties, up to 86% water permeability reduction compared to pure chitosonium-acetate films, as well as excellent antimicrobial activity. Solid-state (2)H-NMR is routinely used to determine the alignment of membrane-bound peptides. Here we demonstrate that it can also provide a quantitative measure of the fluctuations around the distinct molecular axes.
