The density and movements of fish under ice were studied with single-beam mobile surveys and fixed location split-beam surveys, as well as exploratory fishing in winter-seining areas of two shallow Finnish lakes during winter 1999. Fish schooled near the bottom during the day but the schools dispersed and fish ascended at night. Single and split-beam target strength distributions corresponded fairly closely with the length distribution of seine catch samples. Estimated fish densities were greater at night than in daylight. The present study evaluated the degree of differentiation between closely-related species of Blyth's leaf warbler complex (Phylloscopus reguloides s.l.) and white-tailed leaf warbler complex (Phylloscopus davisoni s.l.) by molecular (cytochrome b and 16S rRNA) and bioacoustic markers (sonagraphic analysis of songs). Molecular phylogenetic results corroborate the recently suggested splittings of the two former taxa into three and two species, respectively. By contrast to previous opinion, differentiation of territorial songs parallels the genetic diversification in both groups. In the P. reguloides group, all recently established species can be distinguished by a characteristic song pattern.…

Duration from sowing to flowering is the most important trait influencing adaptation in pigeon pea (Cajanus cajan), but the inheritance of this trait has not been elucidated clearly. Crosses were made between two early (60 to 70d) and one late (160 to 170d) flowering pigeonpea genotype and F1, F2 and BC1 populations produced. Essential oils from the aerial parts of three Eriocephalus africanus L. var. africanus populations were analysed by means of GC–FID and GC–MS. Sixty-one constituents were identified, representing more than 96% of the total oil composition. Artemisia ketone (56.46–56.58%), intermedeol (9.19–11.63%) and γ-eudesmol (4.26–5.64%) were the main compounds. Cytokines of the interleukin-6 (IL-6) family participate in regulatory and inflammatory processes within the nervous system. IL-6, ciliary neurotrophic factor (CNTF) and IL-11 act via specific membrane receptors which, together with their ligands, associate with signal-transducing receptor subunits thereby initiating cytoplasmic signalling. Cells which only express signal-transducing receptor subunits but no ligand binding subunits for IL-6, CNTF and IL-11 are refractory to these cytokines. The chemical composition of the essential oils of two Nepeta species collected in Lebanon was studied by means of GC and GC-MS analysis. The essential oil from N. curviflora Boiss. contained high amounts of β-caryophyllene (41.6%), caryophyllene oxide (9.5%), (E)-β-farnesene (6.2%) and (Z)-β-farnesene (4.8%); in the oil from N. nuda L. subsp. albiflora (Boiss.) Abstract Cirsium and Carduus are two of the main genera of true thistles. Different species in these genera share a quantity of secondary metabolites and have interesting ecological properties.
