Ambulatory blood pressure and arterial stiffness web-based telemonitoring in patients at cardiovascular risk. First results of the VASOTENS (Vascular…

2019

The VASOTENS Registry is an international telehealth-based repository of 24-hour ambulatory blood pressure monitorings (ABPM) obtained through an oscillometric upper-arm BP monitor allowing combined estimation of some vascular biomarkers. The present paper reports the results obtained in 1200 participants according to different categories of CV risk. Individual readings were averaged for each recording and 24-hour mean of brachial and aortic systolic (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP), pulse wave velocity (PWV), and augmentation index (AIx) obtained. Peripheral and central BP, PWV and AIx values were increased in older participants (SBP only) and in case of hypertension (SBP and DBP).…

Nutcracker syndrome due to left renal vein compression by an aberrant right renal artery

2007

Classic nutcracker syndrome is caused by left renal vein compression between the superior mesenteric artery and aorta, leading to retrograde venous hypertension associated with such urinary abnormalities as hematuria or proteinuria. We describe a case of symptomatic nutcracker syndrome treated by means of stent placement in which hypertension in the left renal vein was caused by stenosis of this vein compressed by an aberrant right renal artery at a point closer to the inferior vena cava.

Angiotensin II-induced vascular dysfunction depends on interferon-γ-driven immune cell recruitment and mutual activation of monocytes and NK-cells.

2013

Objective— Immune cells contribute to angiotensin II (ATII)–induced vascular dysfunction and inflammation. Interferon-γ (IFN-γ), an inflammatory cytokine exclusively produced by immune cells, seems to be involved in ATII-driven cardiovascular injury, but the actions and cellular source of IFN-γ remain incompletely understood. Approach and Results— IFN-γ −/− and Tbx21 −/− mice were partially protected from ATII-induced (1 mg/kg per day of ATII, infused subcutaneously by miniosmotic pumps) vascular endothelial and smooth muscle dysfunction, whereas mice overexpressing IFN-γ showed constitutive vascular dysfunction. Absence of T-box expressed in T cells (T-bet), the IFN-γ transcription factor…

Blood pressure and pulse wave velocity values in the institutionalized elderly aged 80 and over: baseline of the PARTAGE study.

2009

The aim of the longitudinal study PARTAGE (predictive values of blood pressure and arterial stiffness in institutionalized very aged population) was to determine the predictive value of blood pressure (BP) and arterial stiffness for overall mortality, major cardiovascular events and cognitive decline in a large population of institutionalized patients aged 80 and over. In the study herein, we present the baseline data values of this study.A total of 1130 patients were recruited (878 women), living in French and Italian nursing homes. Clinical and 3-day self-measurements of BP were conducted. Aortic and upper limb pulse wave velocity were obtained using a PulsePen tonometer.Of this populatio…

CT angiography versus intraarterial digital subtraction angiography for assessment of aortoiliac occlusive disease.

1997

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the accuracy of CT angiography (CTA) with a single helical acquisition for assessment of stenoses and occlusions of the iliac arteries. In our prospective study, intraarterial digital subtraction angiography and IV CTA were performed from the suprarenal aorta to below the femoral bifurcation in 30 patients with vascular occlusive disease. Maximum-intensity-projection images in multiple views were also obtained. The accuracy of CTA with and without analysis of axial images was determined.Sensitivity and specificity of CTA were 100% for iliac artery occlusions with a confidence interval 85-100% and 97-100%, respectively. When axial scans were interpret…

ECG-GATED MULTIDETECTOR COMPUTED TOMOGRAPHY FOR THE ASSESSMENT OF THE POSTOPERATIVE ASCENDING AORTA

2009

This study was undertaken to define the role of electrocardiographically (ECG)-gated multidetector computed tomography (MDCT) in the assessment of the postoperative ascending aorta. From November 2006 to June 2007, 21 patients, [11 men, ten women; age +/- standard deviation (SD): 62.7 +/- 10.8 years] with a history of ascending aorta replacement underwent ECG-gated MDCT and were prospectively included in our study. Ascending aorta replacement had been performed with different surgical techniques: Bentall-De Bono (four patients, 19%), Tirone-David (five patients, 23%), and modified Tirone-David with creation of aortic neosinuses (12 patients, 57%). Two patients were excluded from MDCT evalua…

Detection of a Dissecting Aortic Aneurysm by Renal Transplant Imaging

1997

After 2 years with a normal post-transplant course a 45-year-old man showed an elevated creatinine level (4.5 mg/dL). Transplantation had been neccessary because of progressive glomerulonephritis. Renal transplant imaging was obtained with 150 Mbq Tc-99m MAG3. The perfusion images showed radionuclide accumulation in the area of the upper abdominal aorta and delayed perfusion of the right iliac artery. Accumulation of Tc-99m MAG3 in the transplant was slow and no filling of the bladder could be observed. Immediately after imaging, the patient developed acute hemorrhagic shock. At emergency surgery, a long dissecting and ruptured aneurysm of the abdominal aorta was seen causing delayed and re…

The effect of S-(+)-boldine on the α1-adrenoceptor of the guinea-pig aorta

1996

1. The cardiovascular activity of S-(+)-boldine, an aporphine alkaloid structurally related to papaverine, was determined. The work includes functional studies on guinea-pig isolated aorta contracted with noradrenaline, caffeine, KCl or Ca2+, and on guinea-pig trachea contracted with acetylcholine or histamine. 2. S-(+)-boldine inhibited in a concentration-dependent manner the contractile response evoked by noradrenaline (10 microM) in guinea-pig aorta (IC50 = 1.4 +/- 0.2 microM) while the KCl depolarizing solution (60 mM)- or the Ca2+ (1 mM)-induced contractions were only partially affected by boldine up to 300 microM. In contrast, papaverine relaxed noradrenaline (NA), KCl or Ca2+ induced…

The neuropeptide calcitonin gene-related peptide differently modulates proliferation and differentiation of smooth muscle cells in culture depending …

2001

Abstract Calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) is a neuropeptide present around vasculature very early during development, when smooth muscle cells (SMC) are still proliferating and not yet totally differentiated. We investigated the effects of CGRP on proliferation and differentiation of SMC in culture; 10 −7 M CGRP added in the medium of cultured smooth muscle cells every 2 days did not significantly changed cells growth rate in 1% FCS. At the opposite, this treatment modulated proliferation of cells grown in 10% FCS medium. Two distinct populations of SMC with different growth rates were obtained from our primary cultures. SMC which proliferated slowly in the presence of 10% fetal calf …

Role of endothelium in the responses to noradrenaline in normal and sensitized guinea-pig aorta

1993

1. The pharmacological reactivity of sensitized blood vessels has been less studied than that of the airways. Aorta rings were obtained from normal (non-sensitized) and actively sensitized guinea-pigs, and prepared for isometric recording of tension changes. 2. Noradrenaline (10 nM-0.1 mM), histamine (0.1 microM-0.1 mM) and KCl (10-100 mM) produced concentration-related contractions of normal tissues. Removal of endothelium resulted in a marked leftward and upward shift of the concentration-response curve for noradrenaline but it did not alter histamine- or KCl-induced responses. Pretreatment with L-NG-nitroarginine (L-NOARG, 30 microM), haemoglobin (5 microM) or ibuprofen (10 microM) enhan…
