Biopsychosocial framework – pain impacting life on multiple biopsychosocial domains

2021

The current main guidelines recommend management of musculoskeletal conditions within a biopsychosocial framework [1]. From time to time, a question arises whether this is too early as there is not...

Evaluation of training in guideline-oriented biopsychosocial management of low back pain in occupational health services:Protocol of a cluster random…

2021

Background To prevent low back pain (LBP) from developing into a prolonged disabling condition, clinical guidelines advocate early stage assessment, risk‐screening, and tailored interventions. Occupational health services recommend guideline‐oriented biopsychosocial screening and individualized assessment and management. However, it is not known whether training a limited number of health care professionals improves the management process. The primary objective of this study is to investigate whether training in the biopsychosocial practice model is effective in reducing disability. Furthermore, we aim to evaluate health‐economic impacts of the training intervention in comparison to usual m…

Atypical Antipsychotics in the Treatment of Acute Bipolar Depression with Mixed Features: A Systematic Review and Exploratory Meta-Analysis of Placeb…

2016

Evidence supporting the use of second generation antipsychotics (SGAs) in the treatment of acute depression with mixed features (MFs) associated with bipolar disorder (BD) is scarce and equivocal. Therefore, we conducted a systematic review and preliminary meta-analysis investigating SGAs in the treatment of acute BD depression with MFs. Two authors independently searched major electronic databases from 1990 until September 2015 for randomized (placebo-) controlled trials (RCTs) or open-label clinical trials investigating the efficacy of SGAs in the treatment of acute bipolar depression with MFs. A random-effect meta-analysis calculating the standardized mean difference (SMD) between SGA an…

2013

2017

This PhD Dissertation adds two new results in detecting signs of financial fraud: (1) the application of automated learning techniques to internal accounting databases of companies to detect money laundering, and (2) the offer of information to the investigating authorities on how the money laundering network is organized, with the objective of orientating the judicial investigation towards those companies or physical persons who present signs of suspicious patterns. Thus, in the context of a real macro-case on money laundering in which the author has collaborated as forensic accountant, this study analyses the database available of the operations carried out between a core company and a se…

Association between chronic dental infection and acute myocardial infarction.

2008

Introduction: In patients with cardiovascular diseases several risk factors such as high blood pressure, diabetes, smoking and drinking habits, genetic disposition, and chronic inflammation must be considered. The aim of this study was to investigate whether there is a correlation between dental origin infections and the presence of an acutemyocardialinfarction(AMI).Methods:Atotalof125 patients who had experienced a myocardial infarction and 125healthyindividualswereincludedinthisstudy.Theoral examination was carried out following the consent of the ethics committee and the National Board for Radiation Protection and included the number of teeth, endodontically treated teeth, periodontal sc…

Identifying human platelet glycoproteins IIb and IIIa by capillary electrophoresis.

1998

Glanzmann thrombasthenia (GT) is an inherited hemorrhagic defect due to a failure of the platelet membrane glycoprotein (GP) IIb–IIIa complex. Capillary electrophoresis (CE) analysis of solubilized platelet membranes from normal individuals showed the presence of two peaks with a migration time of 27 and 29 min, respectively. An excellent run-to-run and day-to-day reproducibility of the technique (< 1% variation of the retention time) was documented. Using an automated Ferguson method, the apparent molecular masses were 100.0 kDa and 138.5 kDa, respectively. Immunoprecipitation with monoclonal antibodies anti-GP IIIa (B59.2.1) and anti-IIb (61.9.1.3) showed the two peaks as IIIa and IIb, re…

Identification and quantitation of trace amounts of barbiturates with glass capillary gas chromatography

1979

Pre-chromatographic reactions are no longer a necessary evil. Equipment such as the microrefluxer now allows reproducible 7-μl-reactions to be carried out in a short time. Thus multiple derivatisations can be used together with glass capillary GC for routine identifications. The method has been succesfully applied to barbiturates. Retention data of their methyl-, allyl- and benzyl-derivatives are given. Quantitative blood level determinations are briefly discussed.
