Nitric Oxide: A Rate-Limiting Factor for Metastases Development

2010

Genomic and phenotypic instability associates with cancer cell heterogeneity. Although it has been argued that metastatic/invasive phenotypes are already present in primary tumors, highly aggressive and resistant cancer cell subsets may develop during in vivo growth and/or as a consequence of therapy. Moreover, factors such as the attack of our immune system or organ-specific microenvironments also affect cancer cell behavior and the subsequent response to drugs and/or other therapeutic agents. Interaction of cancer and endothelial cells in capillary beds initiates a cascade of molecular events that involve cytokines, growth factors, bioactive lipids, and reactive nitrogen and oxygen specie…

The analysis of 51 genes in DSM-IV combined type attention deficit hyperactivity disorder: association signals in DRD4, DAT1 and 16 other genes.

2006

Contains fulltext : 35205.pdf (Publisher’s version ) (Closed access) Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a common neurodevelopmental disorder, starting in early childhood and persisting into adulthood in the majority of cases. Family and twin studies have demonstrated the importance of genetic factors and candidate gene association studies have identified several loci that exert small but significant effects on ADHD. To provide further clarification of reported associations and identify novel associated genes, we examined 1,038 single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) spanning 51 candidate genes involved in the regulation of neurotransmitter pathways, particularly dopamine, nor…

Genome-wide association scan of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder

2008

Contains fulltext : 70191.pdf (Publisher’s version ) (Closed access) Results of behavioral genetic and molecular genetic studies have converged to suggest that genes substantially contribute to the development of attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), a common disorder with an onset in childhood. Yet, despite numerous linkage and candidate gene studies, strongly consistent and replicable association has eluded detection. To search for ADHD susceptibility genes, we genotyped approximately 600,000 SNPs in 958 ADHD affected family trios. After cleaning the data, we analyzed 438,784 SNPs in 2,803 individuals comprising 909 complete trios using ADHD diagnosis as phenotype. We present t…

Increased endocannabinoid levels reduce the development of precancerous lesions in the mouse colon

2007

Colorectal cancer is an increasingly important cause of death in Western countries. Endocannabinoids inhibit colorectal carcinoma cell proliferation in vitro. In this paper, we investigated the involvement of endocannabinoids on the formation of aberrant crypt foci (ACF, earliest preneoplastic lesions) in the colon mouse in vivo. ACF were induced by azoxymethane (AOM); fatty acid amide hydrolase (FAAH) and cannabinoid receptor messenger ribonucleic acid (mRNA) levels were analyzed by the quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR); endocannabinoid levels were measured by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry; caspase-3 and caspase-9 expressions were measured by W…

Iuxta decentiam status mei.

Funerary chapel of archibishop Gil de Albornoz (+1367) constitutes one of the most important tomb buildings in Spanish late Middle Ages. Being an almost neglected work by historiography, its study requires a wide contextualization within the frame of funerary architectura for Castilian kings and secular and ecles…

MICROVASCULAR CHARACTERISTICS OF THE HUMAN FILIFORM PAPILLAE:A VIDEOCAPILLAROSCOPIC STDY.

2006

The aim of this study was to observe the microcirculation characteristics of the human filiform papillae in healthy patients in vivo. Twenty healthy patients were examined using lingual capillaroscopy to investigate the characteristics of microcirculation of the human filiform papillae. Visibility, course, tortuosity, as well as the possible presence of microhemorrhages, the average caliber of the capillary loops and the number of visible capillary loops per square millimeter were evaluated for each patient. The investigation was simple, non-invasive and repeatable for each patient. Microcirculation architecture was characterized by a network of capillaries in polygonal mesh with parallel o…
