Optimizing Exposure Therapy for Pathological Health Anxiety: Considerations From the Inhibitory Learning Approach

2018

Abstract Exposure therapy has demonstrated its efficacy in the treatment of pathological health anxiety—however, psychotherapy research reveals that many patients do not show a clinically significant change. Therefore, improvements are necessary to optimize psychotherapy for pathological health anxiety. Most treatment rationales refer to habituation during exposure as the central mechanism of change. However, there is evidence that extinction learning is mediated by inhibitory learning processes. Targeting these processes may help to improve treatment outcomes in pathological health anxiety. The aim of this review was to adapt, from the inhibitory learning approach and empirical findings, t…

Why corporates syndicate their investments with a specific partner? An explorative analysis of corporate venture capital co-investments

2016

The 80% of corporates that engage in CVC activities, make these investments with other corporates, recognizing the strategic benefits provided by co-investors. Despite the relevance of this phenomenon, no studies focus on the motivations that drive a corporate to syndicate its investments and most important there are no researches that investigate antecedents that drive a corporate in choosing the partner with whom to syndicate the CVC investments. Thus, the aim of this paper is to study why corporates syndicate their CVC investment with a specific partner. Based on the CVC and the alliance literatures we propose a research framework that considers two main elements characterizing a CVC syn…

Tali determinanti riguardano aspetti relativi a…

Disrupting resilient criminal networks through data analysis: The case of Sicilian Mafia

2020

Compared to other types of social networks, criminal networks present hard challenges, due to their strong resilience to disruption, which poses severe hurdles to law-enforcement agencies. Herein, we borrow methods and tools from Social Network Analysis to (i) unveil the structure of Sicilian Mafia gangs, based on two real-world datasets, and (ii) gain insights as to how to efficiently disrupt them. Mafia networks have peculiar features, due to the links distribution and strength, which makes them very different from other social networks, and extremely robust to exogenous perturbations. Analysts are also faced with the difficulty in collecting reliable datasets that accurately describe the…

Granice zewnętrzne Unii Europejskiej a bezpieczeństwo narodowe państw członkowskich w kontekście współczesnego kryzysu migracyjnego

2016

Strengthening of steel-reinforced concrete structural elements by externally bonded FRP sheets and evaluation of their load carrying capacity to face…

2014

The paper has proposed a limit analysis procedure for a preliminary design of RC elements strengthened by externally bonded FRP sheets. The procedure, based on a multi-yield-criteria limit analysis approach, has led to a reliable prediction of peak loads and failure modes of the analyzed elements (slabs) by simultaneously considering the limit state of the constituent materials, so resulting very useful in many applications of engineering interest. The attention has been focused on hospital applications in which increment of service loads or realization of openings can weaken some structural elements that have been strengthened by FRP sheets.

An Economic Viewpoint on Capitalism Bashing

2016

Abstract In this paper I discuss two long disputed notions: that capitalism without crises is a fallacy respectively that capitalism bashing, however severe, will not endanger the system itself. Yet proving both is not an easy task since the capitalism issue has always been a cupellation of theory, ideology and political precepts, which are controversial and hard to disentangle. That capitalism detractors are numberless is a truism. Yet criticism against capitalism, however fierce, has always been clearly delineated. Not any more: globalization has rendered the picture dangerously fuzzy. It is now hard to ascertain whether someone who will harangue about the ostensible evils of globalizatio…

Family business internationalization: an insight into opportunities and challenges.

2020

The theme of internationalization in family businesses is a highly topical issue that is increasingly attracting management scholars. This is because, in addition of being a particular type of business (Alcorn, 1982), they play a central role in most economies worldwide. Accounting for 65-80 percent of all the world’s firms, they generate around 70-90 percent of annual global GDP, and are the source of 50-80 percent of new jobs in most countries. Their essence lies in the close bond they have with their founders and above all, in the family’s involvement in the business ownership and management (Franco and Prata, 2019). This bond may prove to be a limit for fuelling internationalization pro…

The shared image guiding the treatment process. A precondition for integration of the treatment of schizophrenia.

1994

The aim of the study reported here was to develop psychotherapeutic in-patient treatment for acute schizophrenia, following the principles of a need-adapted approach. To improve the integration of experiences which hospital staff have with acutely psychotic patients and their families, systematic supervision sessions were organised. In these sessions, it was possible to achieve shared psychological images through which the whole staff could integrate patients' behaviour and symptoms, both symbolic and non-symbolic. Such an image was called ‘the shared image guiding the treatment process’ (SIGTP). The process of achieving the SIGTP was interpreted through Peircean semiotics, especially the c…
