Meeting the Challenge of Targeting Cancer Stem Cells
2019
Notwithstanding cancer patients benefit from a plethora of therapeutic alternatives, drug resistance remains a critical hurdle. Indeed, the high mortality rate is associated with metastatic disease, which is mostly incurable due to the refractoriness of metastatic cells to current treatments. Increasing data demonstrate that tumors contain a small subpopulation of cancer stem cells (CSCs) able to establish primary tumor and metastasis. CSCs are endowed with multiple treatment resistance capabilities comprising a highly efficient DNA damage repair machinery, the activation of survival pathways, enhanced cellular plasticity, immune evasion and the adaptation to a hostile microenvironment. Due…
Dual Inhibition of Myc Transcription and PI3K Activity Effectively Targets Colorectal Cancer Stem Cells
2022
Despite advances in the curative approach, the survival rate of advanced colorectal cancer (CRC) patients is still poor, which is likely due to the emergence of cancer cell clones resistant to the available therapeutic options. We have already shown that CD44v6-positive CRC stem cells (CR-CSCs) are refractory toward standard anti-tumor therapeutic agents due to the activation of the PI3K pathway together with high HER2 expression levels. Tumor microenvironmental cytokines confer resistance to CR-CSCs against HER2/PI3K targeting by enhancing activation of the MAPK pathway. Here, we show that the CSC compartment, spared by BRAF inhibitor-based targeted therapy, is associated with increased ex…

Oral capillaroscopy: our experience
2009
Capillaroscopy has now definitely become an important and indispensable exam in the area of diagnosing vasculopathies and in particular micro angiopathies. The type of damages connected to these anatomy pathologies regarding the actual micro vascular unit work in a functional pathogenic of an extreme importance, in conditioning the course and the eventual aggravation of micro angiopathies properly called vasculity and also of macro angiopaties. In all, this underlines the great importance achieved by using certain instrumental exams which complements the clinical research, exactly because of the valid elements which have been given for a complete and precise morphological valuation for the …
Capillaroscopic and histologic examination of the human labial mucosa: A new non invasive methodology compared with the histological exam
2005
The aim of our study is to compare the capillaroscopic examination in vivo with the histological examination in vitro of labial microcirculation in healthy subjects. Methods. Twenty-nine subjects (19 females, 10 males; mean±SD age 55.61±2.55; range 45-65 years) were examined in our laboratory. The characteristics of labial microcirculation were examined using computerised videomicroscopic techniques and histological exam. Results. The results obtained with both methods showed some analogies: in fact, the differences in capillary diameter were in the range of ±0.3 µ; regarding capillary density as well, a variation of ±2 capillaries per mm2 was found. Comparing the results obtained with both…
Development of a microfluidic design for an automatic lab-on-chip operation
2016
Simple and easy to use are the keys for developing lab-on-chip technology. Here, a new microfluidic circuit has been designed for an automatic lab-on-chip operation (ALOCO) device. This chip used capillary forces for controlled and precise manipulation of liquids, which were loaded in sequence from different flowing directions towards the analysis area. Using the ALOCO design, a non-expert user is able to operate the chip by pipetting liquids into suitable inlet reservoirs. To test this design, microfluidic devices were fabricated using the programmable proximity aperture lithography technique. The operation of the ALOCO chip was characterized from the flow of red-, blue- and un-dyed deioni…
Optimization of CASA-Mot Analysis of Donkey Sperm : optimum Frame Rate and Values of Kinematic Variables for Different Counting Chamber and Fields
2020
In order to optimize the donkey sperm motility analysis by the CASA (Computer Assisted Sperm Analysis)-Mot system, twelve ejaculates were collected from six jackasses. Capillary loaded chamber (CLC), ISAS®

Transition aux normes comptables IAS/IFRS, discipline de marché et adéquation des fonds propres aux risques dans l'industrie bancaire européenne
2011
This study tests the hypothesis that the mandatory IAS/IFRS adoption leads banks to operate with a higher capital buffer, due to a strengthening of the efficacy of market discipline. For a sample of European banks, we find evidence consistent with the formulated hypothesis. The results contribute to extend to banks the flourishing empirical literature dealing with the economic consequences of the IAS/IFRS mandatory adoption and tend to dampen the recent critics expressed against the use of the IAS/IFRS accounting standards in the banking industry.
CAPITAL FLOW BONANZAS AS A FUNDAMENTAL INGREDIENT IN SPAIN'S FINANCIAL CRISES, 1850-2015
2020
