Influence of age on the interrelation between EEG frequency bands during NREM and REM sleep.

2004

The age-dependence of temporal interrelations between distinct frequency bands of sleep EEG was investigated in a group of 59 healthy young and middle-aged males via cross correlation analysis. Based on global evaluation throughout the entire night, a highly significant decline of the delta/theta correlation with increasing age was found. A separate analysis for non-rapid eye movement (NREM) and rapid eye movement (REM) sleep revealed different changes with aging. During NREM sleep, the correlation between the delta and theta frequency bands decreased with increasing age. In contrast, during REM sleep, a stronger correlation became obvious between the theta, alpha, and beta frequency bands …

HPV DNA in clinically different variants of oral leukoplakia and lichen planus

2004

Abstract Objectives Our objectives were to determine the prevalence of human papillomavirus (HPV) infection in oral leukoplakia (OL) and oral lichen planus (OLP) in comparison with that in healthy oral mucosa, also conditionally to age, gender, smoking, and drinking habits of patients, so as to investigate any possible association of HPV infection with a specific clinical variant of OL or OLP. Study design We did research on HPV DNA in 68 cases of OL (homogeneous form [H] in 45 cases and nonhomogeneous form [non-H] in 23 cases), and in 71 cases of OLP (nonatrophic/erosive form [non-AE] in 27 cases, atrophic/erosive form [AE] in 44 cases). HPV DNA was investigated in exfoliated oral mucosa c…

Immunization Campaigns and Strategies against Human Papillomavirus in Italy: The Results of a Survey to Regional and Local Health Units Representativ…

2019

Objective. The study aimed to assess the impact of HPV immunization campaigns organizational aspects, the characteristics of immunization program (vaccination targets and type of offer), and communicative strategies adopted by four Italian administrative regions on vaccination coverage observed. Methods. From November 2017 to March 2018, regional and Local Health Units (LHUs) representatives were invited to complete an online survey including 54 questions evaluating vaccination invite systems, access systems to vaccination centres, reminder and recall systems, and adverse events surveillance. An overall descriptive analysis was conducted. Since observed vaccine coverage (VC) obtained in fem…

Determinants of high-grade anal intraepithelial lesions in HIV-positive MSM.

2018

Objective - To assess determinants for histologically proven high-grade anal intraepithelial lesions (hHSIL) in HIV-positive men who have sex with men (MSM), a population at high-risk of HPV-related anal cancer. Design - APACHES is a prospective study of anal HPV and related-lesions in 513 HIV-positive MSM aged at least 35 years in six centres across France. Methods - At baseline, participants underwent high-resolution anoscopy (HRA) with biopsy of suspicious lesions, preceded by anal swabs for liquid-based cytology, p16/Ki67 immunostaining, and HPV DNA. hHSIL diagnosis was established by histopathological review panel consensus, and determinants assessed by logistic regression. Results - B…

[123I]IBZM SPECT in patients treated with typical and atypical neuroleptics: relationship to drug plasma levels and extrapyramidal side effects

1997

[123I]Iodobenzamide (IBZM) is an iodine-labeled dopamine receptor ligand and can be used to visualize brain D2 receptors in humans with single photon emission computerized tomography (SPECT). The ratio of striatal IBZM uptake to uptake in frontal cortex (ST/FC ratio) represents a semiquantitative measure of D2 receptor binding in the striatum. Our study sample included six patients treated with haloperidol (3.0-8.0 mg/day orally; one patient with an average of 0.9 mg/day intramuscularly), five patients with benperidol (9.0-15.0 mg/day orally) and nine patients treated with clozapine (200.0-600.0 mg/day orally). Typical neuroleptics (TNs) and atypical neuroleptics (ANs) were significantly di…

Treating homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia in a real-world setting: Experiences with lomitapide

2015

Homozygous familial hypercholesterolaemia (HoFH) is a rare genetic disease characterised by markedly elevated plasma levels of low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (LDL-C). Lomitapide is a microsomal triglyceride transfer protein (MTP) inhibitor approved as an adjunct to other lipid-lowering therapies (LLTs), with or without lipoprotein apheresis (LA), for the treatment of adult HoFH. Diet with <20% calories from fat is required. Due to a varying genetic and phenotypic profile of patients with HoFH, individual patients may respond to therapy differently; therefore examining individual cases in a 'real-world' setting provides valuable information on the effective day-to-day manag…

Evaluation of posttreatment response of hepatocellular carcinoma: comparison of ultrasonography with second-generation ultrasound contrast agent and …

2010

We evaluated the ability of one-month follow-up contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) with second-generation contrast agent in monitoring radio frequency ablation (RFA) and transcatheter arterial chemoembolization (TACE) treatments of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). One-hundred forty-eight HCCs were studied using CEUS: 110 nodules were treated with RFA [41/110 RFA were performed using a pretreatment and an immediate postablation evaluation using CEUS (group 1); 69/110 using only US guidance (group 2)] and 38 nodules treated with TACE. For statistical analysis, McNemar test was used. Overall complete response was observed in 107/148 nodules (92/110 treated with RFA and 15/38 with TACE). A bett…

Effects of Clomipramine on Sleep EEG and Nocturnal Penile Tumescence

1988

The effects of the tricyclic antidepressant clomipramine on sleep EEG and nocturnal penile tumescence (NPT) were investigated during a long-term study in a normal male control subject. During 21 consecutive days the subject received first placebo for 3 days, then stepwise increasing dosages of clomipramine for 10 days, and finally placebo after withdrawal for 8 days. Under clomipramine, rapid eye movement (REM) sleep was suppressed markedly; an REM rebound occurred after withdrawal. Awake and stages 1 and 2 increased while slow wave sleep was diminished under clomipramine. Those non-REM parameters returned to baseline values after drug cessation. NPT was reduced simultaneously with REM slee…

Integrating Downstaging in the Risk Assessment of Patients With Locally Advanced Rectal Cancer Treated With Neoadjuvant Chemoradiotherapy: Validation…

2017

Abstract Background Adjuvant chemotherapy is controversial in patients with locally advanced rectal cancer after preoperative chemoradiation. Valentini et al developed 3 nomograms (VN) to predict outcomes in these patients. The neoadjuvant rectal score (NAR) was developed after VN to predict survival. We aimed to validate these tools in a retrospective cohort at an academic institution. Patients and Methods VN and the NAR were applied to 158 consecutive patients with locally advanced rectal cancer treated with chemoradiation followed by surgery. According to the score, they were divided into low, intermediate, or high risk of relapse or death. For statistical analysis, we performed Kaplan-M…

Progressive versus rapid rate of contraction during 7 wk of isometric resistance training.

2001

The aim of this study was to compare the effects of isometric training performed with progressive versus rapid rate of contraction on the knee extensor neuromuscular properties over a 7-wk period.Sixteen healthy male subjects trained quadriceps femoris muscle in a leg extension machine three times a week during 7 wk. The training sessions consisted of six sets of six maximal isometric contractions. A first group trained by performing progressive contractions lasting 4 s, whereas a second group performed contractions with a rapid rate of contraction (i.e., ballistic contractions) lasting about 1 s.Both groups significantly increased the isometric and isokinetic voluntary torque, and the resp…
