Periapical surgery of maxillary posterior teeth : A review of the literature

2006

Endoscopic findings in periapical surgery. A cross-sectional study of 206 roots

2022

A study is made of the findings of high-magnification rigid endoscopy at the root end surface following apicoectomy of teeth subjected to periapical surgery. A cross-sectional study was made of patients subjected to periapical surgery at the Unit of Oral Surgery and Implantology (University of Valencia, Valencia, Spain) between 2011 and 2019. Following apicoectomy, the root end surfaces were inspected, with the evaluation of untreated canals, isthmuses, craze lines, crack lines, opaque dentin and gaps. Likewise, an analysis was made of the association between patient age and the tooth type and restoration and the presence of craze lines, cracks, opaque dentin and gaps. The final sample cons…

Periapical Microsurgery with an Endoscope and Microscope of Two Upper Central Incisors Already Subjected to Periapical Surgery 25 Years Ago

2020

Introduction. The present clinical case describes periapical microsurgery with an endoscope and microscope in a patient already treated 25 years ago due to persistent periapical disease of the two central upper incisors, restored with poorly adapted crowns. Clinical Case. The first periapical surgery had been performed with silver amalgam as a retrograde filler material, causing grayish staining of the buccal mucosa. Periapical surgery was performed raising a submarginal flap with ostectomy and apicoectomy, retrograde cavity preparation with ultrasound tips, and filling with mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA). After soft tissue healing and complete bone regeneration of the lesion, retreatment…

Efficacy of low level laser therapy in reducing postoperative pain after endodontic surgery-- a randomized double blind clinical study.

2004

The aim of the study was to evaluate the effect of low level laser application on postoperative pain after endodontic surgery in a double blind, randomized clinical study. Fifty-two healthy adults undergoing endodontic surgery were included into the study. Subsequently to suturing, 26 patients had the operation site treated with an 809 nm-GaAlAs-laser (oralaser voxx, Oralia GmbH, Konstanz, Germany) at a power output of 50 mW and an irradiation time of 150 s. Laser treatment was simulated in further 26 patients. Patients were instructed to evaluate their postoperative pain on 7 days after surgery by means of a visual analogue scale (VAS). The results revealed that the pain level in the laser…

An update in periapical surgery

2006

Periapical surgery has largely improved at all levels due to new technologies provided by researchers throughout the last years. The aim of this article is to carry out a bibliographic revision of the last seven years. For this reason, we will analyse the studies published in Medline and the most important spanish dental magazines. The subjects to investigate are mainly based on the incorporation of ultrasonic root-end, which allow the performance of small and adjusted retrograde cavities; as well as the new filling materials. We also include magnifying glasses or surgical microscope to the work material, plus surgical laser and the application of guided tissue regeneration.

Clinical evaluation of a modified marginal sulcular incision technique in endodontic surgery

2009

The authors evaluated periodontal parameters following apical surgery using a new marginal sulcular incision. In 65 cases, surgical access was achieved by means of a sulcular incision technique without the involvement of the adjacent periodontia and the interproximal papillae and in 33 cases by means of a submarginal trapezoidal technique. Periodontal parameters (probing pocket depth, gingival recession, clinical attachment loss, and tooth mobility [periotest]) were recorded at baseline and after 6 months. Scar formation and the loss of papilla height were evaluated photographically. No significant changes in the attachment level and no loss of papilla height were found in either group. A s…

Intentional replantation for the management of maxillary sinusitis.

2007

AIM: To present a case that emphasizes the importance of the use of intentional replantation as a technique to successfully treat a periapical lesion and an odontogenic maxillary sinusitis through the alveolus at the same time. SUMMARY: This case report presents a patient with odontogenic maxillary sinusitis secondary to periapical disease of a maxillary molar that had previously received root canal treatment. The molar was extracted, with drainage and rinsing of the maxillary sinus. The apices were resected extra-orally, the retrograde cavities prepared with ultrasound and retrograde fillings of silver amalgam placed. The tooth was then replanted. After 2 years, the patient was asymptomati…

Efficacy of Computer-Aided Static Navigation Technique on the Accuracy of Endodontic Microsurgery. A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

2021

The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to analyze the efficacy of the computer-aided static navigation technique on the accuracy of root apex location in endodontic microsurgery. Material and Methods: A systematic literature review and meta-analysis, based on Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) recommendations, of clinical studies that evaluated the apex location rate of the computer-aided static navigation techniques applied to endodontic microsurgery. A total of four databases were consulted in the literature search: Pubmed-Medline, Scopus, Cochrane, and Web of Science. After eliminating duplicated articles and applying the inclusio…

Magnification in apical surgerymusing the endoscope: a review

2011

Objective: A review is made to determine whether the use of the endoscope in endodontic surgery offers advantages in clinical practice, and whether it improves the clinical and radiographic outcomes of the procedure. Material and methods: The main search terms used were: endodontic surgery, apicoectomy, apical surgery, endoscope, and magnification devices . The authors searched the Medline database for articles published up to 1 September 2010. The review included experimental studies comparing endoscopic microstructural findings with the findings of the naked eye or other magnification devices, as well as prospective clinical trials comparing endodontic surgery with or without the use of a…

The evaluation of apicectomy without retrograde filling in terms of lesion size localization and approximation to the anatomic structures

2018

Background The purpose of this study was to evaluate of the patients who underwent apical resection. Besides assess the classification of resection side, localization, lesion size, approximation of anatomic structures and the purpose of the apical surgery retrospectively. Material and Methods In this stutdy 782 patients and 1191 apical resection applied tooth evaluated. 504 of the patients were famale and 278 were male. Patients age was between 13 and 76 years old and operated between January 2016 and January 2017. The study includes incisor, canine and premolar teeth which had the apical resection as the first time. Operation side evaluated from orthopantomograph and periapical radiographs…
