Clinical and histological features of gingival lesions: A 17-year retrospective analysis in a northern Italian population
2012
Objectives: Only few studies on gingival lesions considered large enough populations and contemporary literature does not provide a valid report regarding the epidemiology of gingival lesions within the Italian population. The histopathological and clinical appearance of 538 gingival lesions from northern Italians are described and discussed here. Study Design: The case records of patients referred for the diagnosis and management of gingival lesions, from October 1993 to October 2009, were reviewed. Data regarding the histological type of lesion were also obtained from the biopsy register for each case, and blindly re-examined. Results: We reported a greater frequency of benign lesions (re…
Self-Reported versus Measured Height, Weight and Body Mass Index in Spanish Mediterranean Teenagers: Effects of Gender, Age and Weight on Perceptual …
2002
<i>Background:</i> To have a good physical appearance is a determining factor by which adolescents show a tendency to worry excessively about their weight. The aim of this work is to study the possible relationship between actual and perceived body weight, how it is considered and what strategies are followed for weight control among adolescents residing in Valencia. <i>Methods:</i> A sample of 568 students, 325 girls and 243 boys, aged 14–20 years, were selected from public high schools in Valencia. Their height and weight were used to calculate their actual body mass index (BMIO). The subjective perception of their physical measurements (BMIS) was evaluated by mean…
Benign oral vascular lesions treated by sclerotherapy with ethanolamine oleate : a retrospective study of 43 patients
2017
Background Although sclerotherapy is a common treatment for benign oral vascular lesions, there is no well-standardized protocol for this purpose. The aim of the present study was to describe the clinical characteristics of patients treated by sclerotherapy with ethanolamine oleate (EO), in order to contribute to a better understanding of this technique. Material and Methods Medical records and images of 90 patients treated by the same sclerotherapy protocol were retrieved and analysed. Thus, 43 cases with complete information were selected and described. Results The most affected age group was 41–70 years, with a female predominance and 86% of patients being Caucasian. Lips were the most a…
Anxiety and subjective quality of life preoperatively and 4 months after reduction mammaplasty.
2005
Abstract Objective The aim of this study was to evaluate the development of anxiety, psychological distress, and subjective quality of life on the basis of the criteria of satisfaction and expectations in a group of women who had undergone reduction mammaplasty for cosmetic reasons. Method The population consisted of 20 women who had requested breast reduction treatment [mean age, 34.70 (±10.94)] for cosmetic reasons. After being informed of the purpose of the study and after giving their written consent, the subjects took part in a psychological examination conducted at two different times (T1, initial medical consultation; T2, 4 months after surgery). At each of these stages, the psycholo…
The CARe Burn Scale—Adult Form: Translation and linguistic validation into Finnish
2021
Abstract Background Burn injury can dramatically deteriorate health-related quality of life. Effective burn care may minimize the impact of the burn injury and ensure optimal functional outcome. This requires continuous improvement in burn care and assessment of treatment results. The aim of this study was to translate, culturally adapt and linguistically validate the CARe Burn Scale—Adult Form, a burn-specific patient-reported outcome measure, into Finnish. Methods The translation process followed the International Society for Pharmacoeconomics and Outcomes Research guidelines consisting of forward and backward translations, pilot-testing and cognitive debriefing interviews of five burn pa…
A pigmented papule acting like a playful ghost: dermoscopy of three targetoid hemosiderotic hemangiomas
2018
Targetoid hemosiderotic hemangioma represents an uncommon, distinctive, benign lympho-vascular lesion, with a variable clinical appearance, typically occurs in the lower limbs and trunk. Most patients are in their 20's or 30's. We describe three dermoscopic cases followed by the review of the literature. Dermoscopic images have been collected and have been evaluated for the presence of dermoscopic features. Concerning the review, we researched on pubmed and records were reviewed noting patient age of onset, sex, location, overall size, dermoscopic appearance. The harmonic mean age of patients was 31 years; the female-to-male ratio was 1:1, and the most common locations were lower extremitie…
Comparison and multiresolution analysis of irregular meshes with appearance attributes
2004
We present in this dissertation a method to compare and to analyse irregular meshes with appearance attributes. First, we propose a mesh comparison method using a new attribute deviation metric. Considered meshes contain geometric and appearance attributes (e.g. color, texture, temperature). The proposed deviation assessment allows the computation of local attribute differences between two meshes. We present an application of this method to mesh simplification algorithm quality assessment. Then we propose two multiresolution analysis schemes for irregular meshes with appearance attributes. First, a mesh is decomposed in a discret number of levels of detail. We introduce a surface geometry rel…

Are You Able to Trust Me? Analysis of the Relationships Between Personality Traits and the Assessment of Attractiveness and Trust
2021
Behavioral and neuroimaging studies show that people trust and collaborate with others based on a quick assessment of the facial appearance. Based on the morphological characteristics of the face, i.e., features, shape, or color, it is possible to determine health, attractiveness, trust, and some personality traits. The study attempts to indicate the features influencing the perception of attractiveness and trust. In order to select individual factors, a model of backward stepwise logistic regression was used, analyzing the results of the psychological tests and the attractiveness and trust survey. Statistical analysis made it possible to select the most important personality traits related…
Reflectance-based surface saliency
2017
In this paper, we propose an original methodology allowing the computation of the saliency maps for high dimensional RTI data (Reflectance Transformation Imaging). Unlike most of the classical methods, our approach aims at devising an intrinsic visual saliency of the surface, independent of the sensor (image) and the geometry of the scene (light-object-camera). From RTI data, we use the DMD (Discrete Modal Decomposition) technique for the angular reflectance reconstruction, which we extend by a new transformation on the modal basis enabling a rotation-invariant representation of reconstructed reflectances. This orientation-invariance of the resulting reflectance shapes fosters a robust esti…
