In this paper, we want to discuss the complexity of the mechanisms of medieval building stone supplying based on a diachronically and multidisciplinary inquiry on several Cistercian and ducal study cases. The first results enlighten the constraint caused by land property that limits the builders to a supplying network shaped by domain and law. Thanks to the growing vitality of trade and the arrival of independent stone providers, criteria of selection gradually focus on stone itself. Both global and individual strategies evolve then, reinventing the networks of stone providing and the markets.

In and around Le Grand-Pressigny (Indre-et-Loire, France), a petrographic study was implementedon 92 ceramic samples from the Final Neolithic sites of Le Petit-Paulmy and Bergeresse (Abilly).Analyses showed that the sediments used were extracted from local sources: Claise and Creusealluvium, local substrate and loessic silts. Quantitatively, the study showed that almost all the ceramicmaterials in Bergeresse and more than half of those in Le Petit-Paulmy come from the valley of theCreuse. In order to go further limits inherent to subject disjunction, or those imposed by sources, periods or sites, this thesis emphasises a multidisciplinary and diachronic approach of stone supply on medieval and modern building sites. Thanks to the confrontation of buildings with different origins and functions, this work tries to dissect process of choices and stone supply network. It finally considers connection between people and a natural ressource.
