Light intensity preference of juvenile pikeperch Sander lucioperca (L.)

2006

Light intensity preference of the pikeperch was tested in 1-m2 tanks divided into four lateral compartments with a hole in the middle to allow the fish to move between compartments. Two experiments were carried out with both 0+ and 1+ pikeperch: one testing intensities from 25 to 300 lx and the other from 1 to 50 lx. Light preference was observed individually for 5 days at 8, 11, 14 and 17 h. On the first and fifth day, the preference was tested without differences in light intensity (control). In both experiments, both age groups showed preference for the lowest available light intensity. Preference for low light intensity in pikeperch may be related to innate activity and feeding behaviou…

Successive Invasion-Mediated Interspecific Hybridizations and Population Structure in the Endangered Cichlid Oreochromis mossambicus.

2013

Hybridization between invasive and native species accounts among the major and pernicious threats to biodiversity. The Mozambique tilapia Oreochromis mossambicus, a widely used freshwater aquaculture species, is especially imperiled by this phenomenon since it is recognized by the IUCN as an endangered taxon due to genetic admixture with O. niloticus an invasive congeneric species. The Lower Limpopo and the intermittent Changane River (Mozambique) drain large wetlands of potentially great importance for conservation of O. mossambicus, but their populations have remained unstudied until today. Therefore we aimed (1) to estimate the autochthonous diversity and population structure among genet…

Population structure and recruitment of the ectoparasite Argulus coregoni Thorell (Crustacea: Branchiura) on a fish farm

2003

The population structure and recruitment of Argulus coregoni was monitored at a Finnish fish farm during the open water periods of 1999 and 2001 by weekly sampling of attached argulids. In 2001 the numbers of rainbow trout examined increased in the autumn when the A. coregoni population was declining. When the water temperature exceeded 10 degrees C, at the end of May, A. coregoni egg hatching commenced. A mean number of 98 (S.D. +/- 5.4) juvenile A. coregoni was recorded on each fish, before the start of female egg laying in July 1999. The abundance of lice was lower in 2001. The main recruitment of A. coregoni juveniles occurred in early summer, but the hatching of eggs continued until Se…

Sustaining Canadian marine biodiversity: Policy and statutory progress

2020

A 2012 Expert Panel Report on marine biodiversity by the Royal Society of Canada (RSC) concluded that Canada faced significant challenges in achieving sustainable fisheries, regulating aquaculture, and accounting for climate change. Relative to many countries, progress by Canada in fulfilling international obligations to sustain biodiversity was deemed poor. To track progress by Canada since 2012, the RSC struck a committee to track policy and statutory developments on matters pertaining to marine biodiversity and to identify policy challenges, and leading options for implementation that lie ahead. The report by the Policy Briefing Committee is presented here. It concluded that Canada has …

Aquaculture and its by-products as a source of nutrients and bioactive compounds

2020

Underutilized marine resources (e.g., algae, fish, and shellfish processing by-products), as sustainable alternatives to livestock protein and interesting sources of bioactive compounds, have attracted the attention of the researchers. Aquatic products processing industries are growing globally and producing huge amounts of by-products that often discarded as waste. However, recent studies pointed out that marine waste contains several valuable components including high-quality proteins, lipids, minerals, vitamins, enzymes, and bioactive compounds that can be used against cancer and some cardiovascular disorders. Besides, previously conducted studies on algae have shown the presence of some…

Evolucion paleoambiental desde el Holoceno temprano hasta la actualidad del marjal de Almenara (Mediterráneo occidental)

2018

The main aim of this study is to characterize the different stages in the palaeoenvironmental evolution of the Almenara marsh, Spain, from the early Holocene to the present day. This marsh is one of the most important in Castellón province. Five cores extracted from the marsh underwent sedimentological analysis, micropalaeontological study (foraminifera, ostracods and gastropods) and 14C dating. The results show that before the maximum transgression of the Mediterranean during the Marine Isotope Stage 1 (5500 cal yr. BP dating in the Almenara marsh), the area was occupied by a brackish marsh (prior to the 8.2 ka event). During the middle Holocene, the regional sea level rise and later stabi…

European perch (Perca fluviatilis) fed dietary insect meal (Tenebrio molitor): From a stable isotope perspective

2021

Abstract Stable isotope analysis was conducted to investigate stable isotope ratios of carbon (δ13C) and nitrogen (δ15N), diet-tissue discrimination factors of carbon (Δ13C) and nitrogen (Δ15Ν). Bayesian mixing models were performed to assess relative contribution of insect meal and other ingredients to the development of tissues of European perch (Perca fluviatilis). Accordingly, four experimental formulations, characterized by the increasing inclusion levels of yellow mealworm (Tenebrio molitor) larvae meal (TM) at 0, 6.8, 13.5 and 20.3% as replacement for fishmeal at 0 (TM0), 25 (TM25), 50 (TM50) and 75% (TM75), respectively, were fed to juvenile perch (initial bodyweight, 20.81 ± 3.36 g…

Tooth oxygen isotopes reveal Late Bronze Age origin of Mediterranean fish aquaculture and trade

2018

AbstractPast fish provenance, exploitation and trade patterns were studied by analyzing phosphate oxygen isotope compositions (δ18OPO4) of gilthead seabream (Sparus aurata) tooth enameloid from archaeological sites across the southern Levant, spanning the entire Holocene. We report the earliest evidence for extensive fish exploitation from the hypersaline Bardawil lagoon on Egypt’s northern Sinai coast, as indicated by distinctively high δ18OPO4 values, which became abundant in the southern Levant, both along the coast and further inland, at least from the Late Bronze Age (3,550–3,200 BP). A period of global, postglacial sea-level stabilization triggered the formation of the Bardawil lagoon…

Monitoring the habitat use of common Bottlenose Dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) using passive acoustics in a Mediterranean marine protected area

2014

The Mediterranean Tursiops truncatus subpopulation has been classified as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List because of its decline. This species in coastal areas is exposed to a wide variety of threats: directed kills, bycatch, reduced prey availability caused by environmental degradation and overfishing, habitat degradation including disturbances from boat traffic and noise. Despite the increase in boat traffic in the Mediterranean Sea, the effect on T. truncatus’ habitat use has been studied in little detail and few data have been published. This study represents the first attempt to characterise spatial and temporal habitat use by T. truncatus and its relation to boat traffic in the Isole …
