Aquaponics is a technique where a recirculating aquaculture system (RAS) and hydroponics are integrated to grow plants and fish in a closed system. We investigated if the growth of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) and baby spinach (Spinacia oleracea) would be affected in a coupled aquaponic system compared to the growth of the fish in RAS or plants in a hydroponic system, all systems as three replicates. Prevention of fungal infestation of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) eggs using UV irradiation of the hatching water

Abstract Fungal infestation by water mold Saprolegnia spp. causes great losses in aquaculture and fish egg hatching. To find a safe and effective alternative for the fungal prevention, we studied continuous disinfection of the inlet water by UV irradiation and ozonation combined with low concentration hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) treatments in a rainbow trout ( Oncorhynchus mykiss ) egg hatching system. High dose of UV irradiation (400 mWs/cm 2 ) of the inlet water decreased the mortality of rainbow trout eggs from the 77.3% to 14.3% in a 28 day trial. The effect of the length of repeated feed deprivation between single meals on compensatory growth of pikeperch Sander lucioperca

Abstract Juvenile pikeperch ( Sander lucioperca ) were reared for 58 days according to one of the following feeding regimes: control (fed once every day); 1 + 1 (fed every other day); 1 + 3 (one-day feeding followed by a three-day feed deprivation); and 1 + 6 (fed once a week). Control fish had significantly higher growth rate than the 1 + 3 and 1 + 6 fish, and consequently the final weight of the controls (125.2 ± SD 30.0 g, n  = 4) was higher than that of the 1 + 3 (84.0 ± 17.9 g) and 1 + 6 fish (64.7 ± 7.2 g). High dietary inclusion level of fresh herring impairs growth of rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss

Abstract One-year old rainbow trout (initially 350–670 g) were fed for 15 weeks diets containing various amounts of water (23–67%). This was achieved by replacing fish meal with Baltic herring. The growth of rainbow trout, whether measured as wet weight, protein or energy, was impaired when 50–55% dietary water was fed. The fish compensated for increasing dietary water content by consuming more diet so that the dry matter intake of the diets with 23 and 67% water were equal. Partitioning of growth into protein and lipid as well as protein and energy retention efficiencies were unaffected by dietary water. Probiotic properties of Brevibacillus brevis and its influence on sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) larval rearing

Efficacy of Brevibacillus brevis strain and its influence on larval rearing of sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) were investigated in the present work. Biochemical analyses permit to identify this strain as B. brevis. This bacterium has an inhibitory effect against fish pathogenic bacteria, especially the genus of Vibrio. Enzymatic characterization revealed that B. brevis was lipase positive, amylase, lecithinase and caseinase negative. Adherence assays to abiotic surfaces and challenge test with Artemia larvae demonstrate that B. brevis was fairly adherent and play an important role in the enhancement of the protection of Artemia culture against pathogens. Effects of feeding frequency on growth and food utilisation of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) fed low-fat herring or dry pellets

Abstract One-year-old rainbow trout (weight range 400–700 g) were fed for 18 weeks on low-fat herring or commercial dry pellets 1, 2 or 4 times in a day. Quadratic regression analysis indicated that at least three feedings were required for maximum growth and that fish fed a dry diet could benefit from even more frequent feeding. The proportion of lipid in growth increased with increased number of feedings, but the protein content was not affected (mean 18.6% protein wet basis). Food consumption (dry weight) was affected in a similar manner for both diets and its maximum occurred at slightly higher frequency than for maximum growth.
