Sorption of Pd(II) ion by calcium alginate gel beads at different chloride concentrations and pH. A kinetic and equilibrium study
2016
Abstract A kinetic and thermodynamic study on the sorption ability of calcium alginate gel beads towards Pd(II) ion was made in aqueous solution at different pH and chloride concentrations. The experimental conditions adopted in the sorption experiments were established on the basis of a speciation study on the Pd 2+ -AA system in which all the side reactions, such as the hydrolysis of Pd(II), the protonation of alginate and the interactions of the ligand and the metal ion with ions of ionic medium were taken into account. In the pH range 2–5 and at chloride concentration in the range 0 ⩽ C Cl - /mmol L −1 ⩽ 10 the gel beads showed good sorption ability towards Pd(II) ion as confirmed by k…
Sorption and mechanism studies of Cu2+, Sr2+ and Pb2+ ions on mesoporous aluminosilicates/zeolite composite sorbents
2020
Abstract The research aimed to develop a novel mesoporous aluminosilicate/zeolite composite by the template co-precipitation method. The effect of aluminosilicate (AlSi) and zeolite (NaY) on the basic properties and adsorption capacity of the resultant composite was conducted at different mass ratios of AlSi/NaY (i.e., 5/90, 10/80, 15/85, 20/80, and 50/50). The adsorption characteristics of such composite and its feedstock materials (i.e., aluminosilicates and zeolite) towards radioactive Sr2+ ions and toxic metals (Cu2+ and Pb2+ ions) in aqueous solutions were investigated. Results indicated that BET surface area (SBET), total pore volume (VTotal), and mesopore volume (VMeso) of prepared m…
Synthesis of zeolite/geopolymer composite for enhanced sequestration of phosphate (PO43−) and ammonium (NH4+) ions; equilibrium properties and realis…
2021
Abstract Zeolite impeded geopolymer (Z/G) was synthesized from natural kaolinite and diatomite. The structure (Z/G) was characterized as an enhanced adsorbent for PO43− and NH4+ ions from aqueous solutions, groundwater, and sewage water. The synthetic Z/G structure exhibits sequestration capacities of 206 mg/g and 140 mg/g for PO43− and NH4+, respectively which are higher values than the recognized results for the geopolymer and other adsorbents in literature. The sequestration reactions of PO43− and NH4+ by Z/G are of Pseudo-Second order kinetic behavior considering both the Chi-squared (χ2) and correlation coefficient (R2) values. The sequestration reactions occur in homogenous and monola…
A novel magnetic Preyssler acid grafted chitosan nano adsorbent: synthesis, characterization and adsorption activity
2015
BACKGROUND This study concerns the application of magnetic heteropolyacids composite for the adsorption of organic compounds from aqueous solutions. A novel magnetic Preyssler/chitosan/Fe3O4 nanoparticles composite (PCNF) adsorbent was designed using a one-pot synthesis method and characterized by multiple techniques including X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), N2 adsorption–desorption isotherms and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). RESULTS The adsorption activity of PCNF was evaluated by the removal of methyl orange (as an anionic azo dye model, MO) from aqueous solution and all the factors influencing the removal efficiency, such as adsorbent dosage, initial …
Dual-Emissive Photoluminescent Langmuir−Blodgett Films of Decatungstoeuropate and an Amphiphilic Iridium Complex
2009
Langmuir monolayers and Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films of the decatungstoeuropate [Eu(W(5)O(18))(2)](9-) (EuW(10)) and the amphiphilic Ir complex 1 have been successfully fabricated by using the adsorption properties of the EuW(10) polyanion dissolved in the aqueous subphase onto a positively charged 1 monolayer at the air-water interface. The compression isotherms and Brewster angle microscopy (BAM) of monolayers of 1 on pure water (1 monolayer) and on a subphase containing 10(-6) M EuW(10) and 10(-3) M NaCl (1/EuW(10) monolayer) have been studied. Infrared and UV-vis spectroscopy of the transferred LB films indicate that EuW(10) and 1 molecules are incorporated within these LB films. X-ray …
Development of iron oxide/activated carbon nanoparticle composite for the removal of Cr(VI), Cu(II) and Cd(II) ions from aqueous solution
2018
Iron oxide (Fe3O4) and iron oxide/activated carbon (Fe3O4/AC) were fabricated by co-precipitation method for the removal of Cr(VI), Cu(II) and Cd(II) ions from aqueous solution in batch mode. These nanoparticles were characterized by BET, FTIR, XRD, SEM/TEM and VSM. The optimum conditions for the removal of ions were pH = 2 for Cr(VI) and 6 for Cu(II) and Cd(II), initial metal ion concentration = 50 mg L−1, nanoparticle dose = 50 mg/10 mL, temperature = 25 ± 1 °C, shaking speed = 180 rpm and contact time = 3 h. The equilibrium data of ions sorption were well described by Langmuir, Freundlich, Redlich-Peterson and Intraparticle Diffusion model. The R2 values obtained by Langmuir model were h…
Metal–Organic Frameworks as Playgrounds for Reticulate Single-Molecule Magnets
2019
Achieving an accurate control on the final structure of Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs) is mandatory to obtain target physical properties. Here we describe how the combination of a metalloligand design strategy and a post-synthetic method is a versatile and powerful approach to success on this extremely difficult task. In a first stage, a novel oxamato-based tetranuclear cobalt(III) complex with a tetrahedron-shape geometry is used, for the first time, as metalloligand toward cal-cium(II) cations to lead a diamagnetic Ca(II)-Co(III) three-dimensional (3D) MOF (1). In a second stage, in a single-crystal to single-crystal manner the calcium(II) ions are replaced by terbium (III), dysprosium(I…
Catalytic activity of rare-earth-supported catalysts in Friedel–Crafts acylations
1999
Abstract Friedel–Crafts acylations are catalysed by rare-earth-supported catalysts. The preparation, characterization and performance of these solid catalysts in a test acylation reaction and in a variety of syntheses of aromatic ketones are reported. In contrast to the reactions using AlCl3, the experimental conditions are non-polluting and the final work-up does not require any aqueous treatment.
Tripyridinophane Platform Containing Three Acetate Pendant Arms: An Attractive Structural Entry for the Development of Neutral Eu(III) and Tb(III) Co…
2020
We report a detailed characterization of Eu3+ and Tb3+ complexes derived from a tripyridinophane macro cycle bearing three acetate side arms (H3tpptac). Tpptac3- displays an overall basicity (Σ log KiH) of 24.5, provides the formation of mononuclear ML species, and shows a good binding affinity for Ln3+ (log KLnL = 17.5-18.7). These complexes are also thermodynamically stable at physiological pH (pEu = 18.6, pTb = 18.0). It should be noted that the pGd value of Gd-tpptac (18.4) is only slightly lower than that of commercially available MRI contrast agents such as Gd-dota (pGd = 19.2). Moreover, a very good selectivity for these ions over the endogenous cations (log KCuL = 14.4, log KZnL = 1…
Polysulfonate Cappings on Upconversion Nanoparticles Prevent Their Disintegration in Water and Provide Superior Stability in a Highly Acidic Medium
2018
The stability of organic cappings on hexagonal NaYF4:Ln3+ upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) is crucial for their luminescence efficiency in aqueous solutions. The capping removal quickens as the acidity of the medium increases. We demonstrate here that polysulfonates, namely poly(2-acrylamido-2-methyl-1-propanesulfonate) (PAMPS) and poly(sodium 4-styrene sulfonate) (PSS), remain anchored to the surface of NaYF4:Yb3+,Er3+/Tm3 UCNPs even at a pH as low as 2 due to strong acidity of the sulfonate anchoring groups (pKa of ca. −3). Bare UCNPs progressively disintegrate into their compositional F–, Na+, Y3+, and Ln3+ ions. Their disintegration is particularly worrying in highly diluted dispersio…
