Fuel For Lamps: Organic Residues Preserved in Iron Age Lamps Excavated at the Site of Sahab in Jordan

Five Iron Age ceramic lamps from a tomb at the site of Sahab in the south-eastern part of central Jordan were analysed using gas chromatography – mass spectrometry (GC–MS). The results of this study provide data on the type of fuel used in three of these lamps. The study proposes that animal fat, possibly of ruminant origin, was used in three Early Iron Age II lamps. The material used in the other two Iron Age I lamps could not be determined due to the absence of diagnostic biomarkers. Sibiu and the urban archaeology. During the last two-three decades the urban archaeology in Transylvania has pointed towards a visible progress. In the cities of Alba Iulia, Bistriţa, Brasov, Baia Mare, Dej, Cluj-Napoca, Lugoj, Orastie, Oradea, Sebes, Sfântu Gheorghe, Sibiu, Sighisoara, Timisoara, Târgu Mures and Turda archaeological investigations were carried out. In Sibiu, the first preemptive archaeological excavation took place in 1970 and focused upon the house and residence of the town's former mayor, Altemberger. The aim of this work is to examine whether it is possible to find chemical markers that allow a distinction to be made between the imported black glossed ‘Campanian A’ and the Sicilian imitation (end of fourth to first century bc) of these productions by carrying out quantitative chemical microanalysis of the slip using the SEM–EDS technique. In 1996, a group of Jewish communities finally were able to interrupt the archaeological excavation under way at the medieval Jewish cemetery of Valencia. In this manner they did not allow the anthropological analysis of human remains recovered at the site that were reburied at the Jewish cemetery of Barcelona. Compositional reference for the documented Archaic production of indigenous matt-painted pottery at Entella (Western Sicily)

This contribution is focused on a specific class of indigenous Archaic pottery (sixth and fifth century BC) with matt-painted geometric decoration that was recovered in large quantities in the excavations at Entella, an indigenous site located in western Sicily. The site of Entella was strategically considerable in this part of Sicily, controlling the north-south routes running along the river Belice. Kiln structures were attested at Entella that, until today, it is the only Archaic site in the area with an unmistakable evidence of production of fine pottery. In questo articolo, si cercherà di ricostruire l’attività di un’officina destinata principalmente alla produzione di laterizi con bollo ΟΝΑΣΟΥ, databile fra III e I secolo a.C. Ricerche precedenti hanno permesso di riconoscere nel produttore di questi laterizi lo stesso Onasus Segestanus citato nelle Verrine di Cicerone e di localizzarne una possibile officina presso la Baia di San Cataldo. Abstract Given that amphorae were used for storage or for long and/or short distance transport, they must have been able to retain their content and, at the same time, be able to resist important load during transport.
