Characterisation of clayey raw materials for ceramic manufacture in ancient Sicily

2011

Abstract It is well known that mineralogical, petrographic and chemical analyses can successfully support provenance studies of archaeological ceramics. The characterisation of a ceramic paste, the assessment of its technology of production and its provenance assignment related to a specific production centre or to a geographical and/or compositional space, are all tasks that can be performed even more accurately if the clayey raw materials used in pottery production are also studied. For that reason the identification of the clay deposits exploited in a given ceramic workshop often plays a key role in the archaeometric reconstruction of the production cycle where geology, mineralogy, petro…

Millstone coastal quarries of the Mediterranean: A new class of sea level indicator

2014

The coasts of Italy still preserve several remnants of coastal quarries built in antiquity, that now provide insights into the intervening sea-level changes occurred during the last millennia. In this paper, we show and discuss a new class of sea level indicator consisting of millstones carved along the rocky coast of southern Italy since 2500 BP, that are currently submerged. They were extracted from beachrocks, sandstones or similar sedimentary rocks, easier for carving by ancient carving tools. Our study focuses on 10 coastal sites located at Capo d'Orlando, Avola, and Letojanni, in Sicily; Soverato, Tropea, and Capo dell'Armi, in Calabria; Castellabate, Palinuro, and Scario, in Campania…

MODELIZACIÓN MEDIANTE CFD DE PARA EVALUAR LA VENTILACIÓN EN UN EDIFICIO ARQUEOLÓGICO, DATOS PRELIMINARES.

2016

[EN] The present study addresses the influences of wind flow structure, as an important factor responsible of material damage (erosion contributing) on “Casa di Diana” Mithraeum, a roman building (130 A.D.) sited on Ostia Antica (archaeological site, Rome – Italy), through the Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations and direct measurements for its verification and validation (V&V). In this preliminary work, we present results relating to 3D reconstruction (geometry of the entire building) and the mesh importing on Fluent software. In general, the data check confirms, with ±10%, a good agreement (model) between the numerical solutions and direct measurements data by portable sensor. F…

Preliminary results of the 2017 season in the Amazonian earthen structures known as geoglyphs.

2018

Electrochemical analysis of metallic heritage artefacts: voltammetry of microparticles (VMP)

2013

Abstract: This chapter discusses the application of the voltammetry of microparticles, a solid-state electrochemical technique, to the field of corrosion of archaeological metal. Identification of metals and alloys, identification, mapping and layer-by-layer analysis of corrosion products on metal surfaces using this technique are described. Applications include quantification of components of alloys and corrosion layers, and evaluation of metal conservation and the kinetics of long-term corrosion processes. Specific applications in archaeometry, conservation and restoration include authentication and dating.

Le monastère Saint-Pierre d'Osor (île de Cres) : septième campagne d'études archéologiques

2013

The 2012 campaign of the archaeological research project permitted the exhaustive excavations of the immediate surroundings of the southern nave of the abbey church of St Peter in Osor. The richness and the complexity of the discovered structures confirmed the great archaeological potential of this sector. Namely, a funeral zone that is situated south to the church is occupied by two buildings perpendicular to the church which we interpret as a mausoleum (the one on the west) and a chapel with one privileged burial (the one on the east). The great number of built tombs or simples graves confirmed that this sector had funeral function even before the XIth century and the construction of the …

Virtual Museum Net

2006

A project named ”Virtual Museum Net of Magna Graecia” is presented, whose objective is to provide an unitary image of the archaeological heritage of Calabria (a Southern Italian region), through Computer Technology, Multimedia Designing and Virtual Reconstructions. The project aims to encourage the technological transfer of the most advanced researches in the exploitation and conservation sector of the Cultural Heritage. The ”Virtual Museum Net of Magna Graecia” project is included in the context of Knowledge Media Design for Museums. This project links the museum scenery and multimedia, in order to use technology as system of representation.

Drowned Landscapes: The Rediscovered Archaeological Heritage of the Mosul Dam Reservoir

2023

Like natural catastrophes or armed conflicts, resource extraction projects herald the alteration or destruction of natural and cultural landscapes alike. Dam construction is a major threat to cultural heritage in Western Asian archaeology. One event may result in obliterating hundreds of sites, most of which never reappear or do so only sporadically following cyclical water fluctuation. Destruction of sites remains ongoing, necessitating constant assessment of damage and the establishment of strategies of documentation and maintenance. This paper proposes a new paradigm for future safeguarding and, more widely, a new tool for managing contiguous terrestrial and lacustrine cultural zones. It…

Raman spectroscopy characterization of 10-cash productions from the late Chinese emperors to the Republic

2017

[EN] The use of Raman spectroscopy for discriminating monetary emissions, a recurrent problem in much archaeological studies, is described. The method involves the record of Raman signatures of tenorite and crystalline and defective cuprite in the patina based on the idea that subtle, mint-characteristic variations in the composition and metallography of the base metal during the manufacturing process are reflected in the variation in depth of the composition and crystallinity of the corrosion patina. The technique was applied to a series of 10-cash copper coins produced around the transition between the Kuang Hsu and Hsuan Tung last Chinese emperors and the first Republic whose averaged co…
