Il progetto indispensabile per il costruito archeologico

2021

Technology and Architectural Heritage: Dynamic Connections

2019

Technological aspects strongly characterise the built environment in both material and immaterial dimensions. The architectural heritage (the built environment that has acquired cultural meanings, without prejudice regarding the age and the scale of observation) offers a peculiar point of view for dealing with this issue. This paper outlines the dynamic connections between technology, the whole idea of architectural heritage and the approaches to intervention. A focus is placed on four main theoretical aspects, the effects of which are also significant on the practical field: the distance from contemporaneity; the concept of Time; reliable conservation; sustainability. The technological evo…

A holistic approach to the built heritage in the Mediterranean internal areas: the case study of Montalbano Elicona (ME)

2020

The paper intends to illustrate some research conducted in the framework of a memorandum of understanding signed in 2019 between the Department of Architecture of the University of Palermo and Montalbano Elicona, an old village of about 2100 inhabitants that rises 900 meters above sea level, in the northern part of the province of Messina. Due to the central position in the Mediterranean, since very remote times Sicily has played a role of crossroads for populations of different cultures. For this reason, Montalbano Elicona can be considered a case study of general concern to the built heritage of the Mediterranean area, in which some recurrent specific elements occur. The paper deals with …

Heritage and technology: novel approaches to 3D documentation and communication of architectural heritage

2015

In the past few years we have seen a drastic increasing of image-based modeling (IBM) techniques to get high quality reality-based 3D models. The low costs of these techniques as well as their attractive visual quality have lead many researchers and professionals to invest their energies and resources in several tests. The use of IMB in the field of cultural heritage is mostly exploited in applications such as documentation, digital restoration, visualization, inspection, planning, AR/VR, conservation and design. One of the strengthen of multi-view stereo techniques is the possibility to capture millions of points in a very short time and to get a 3D textured polygonal model that can be eas…

2022

This study is part of a research aimed at developing a database of mechanical and hygrothermal information for Sicilian historic walls. This database is intended to support the analysis of the envelope performances of the historic building and to integrate data collected through in-situ measurements. The method is based on the analysis of local contexts: stone walls are divided in typologies according to the detailed non-destructive examination of the historic building stock, and laboratory and in-situ tests are carried out to characterize the mechanical and thermophysical properties of walls and masonry materials. This study focuses on the local context of Gangi, where a large amount of hi…

Earth in ancient Sicilian architecture / La terra cruda nelle costruzioni della Sicilia antica

2011

Earth as a building material between past and future / Terra cruda nelle costruzioni tra passato e futuro

2011

Renaissance Itineraries between Nebrodi and Peloritani: Architectural Heritage, History and Technology

2022

Within the general framework of a research Project of Relevant National Interest (PRIN 2017), entitled “The Renaissance in Southern Italy and the Islands: Cultural Heritage and Technology”, the research unit based at Palermo University focused on the inner area that includes Nebrodi and Peloritani mountains, as a quite unexplored and stimulating environment in the specific field of investigation. The scientific relevance of the investigation on “Renaissance itineraries” in this territory, for a deeper understanding of the overall cultural phenomenon in the island, guided this choice, as well as the opportunity to create cultural networks among small local communities, encouraging their sust…

Towards a Sustainable Use of Architectural Heritage: How to Assess Accessibility and the User’s Role

2022

Scientific communities and institutional bodies are supporting many shared efforts towards improving accessibility to architectural heritage, in the awareness that it provides the basis for inclusion and enhancement. Accessibility is related to the wider tendency toward a conscious and sustainable use of the architectural heritage, considered as a multifaceted tool for its conservation. This has also highlighted the user’s role, which is paramount in order to reach and increase sustainable processes in the field of architectural heritage, as well as in all the technological processes. The user should be active in his/her relationships with the built heritage, in a multi-sensorial way and in…
