Myeloid sarcoma of the oral cavity : a case report and review of 89 cases from the literature

2017

Myeloid sarcoma is a tumor mass of immature myeloid or granulocytic cells that affects extramedullary anatomic sites, including uncommonly the oral cavity. A 24-year-old female was referred for evaluation of a fast growing painful gingival swelling lasting 2 weeks, associated with fever, fatigue, and cervical lymphadenopathy. Intraoral examination showed a bluish swelling on the right posterior lower gingiva exhibiting necrotic surface. Incisional biopsy of the gingival lesion displayed diffuse infiltration of undifferentiated tumor cells with granulocytic appearance, strongly immunopositive for CD99, myeloperoxidase and Ki-67 (60%), and negative for CD20, CD3, CD34 and TdT. Blood tests pre…

Contribution of IL-17-producing {gamma}{delta} T cells to the efficacy of anticancer chemotherapy.

2011

IL-17 production by γδ T cells is required for tumor cell infiltration by IFN-γ–producing CD8+ T cells and inhibition of tumor growth in response to anthracyclines.

Some intriguing items in the history of adsorption

1994

Abstract Clay was already used in antiquity as a drying and bleaching agent, a carrier for paints, and for various medical purposes. Sand was applied for water desalination. Charcoal was recommended as an antidote Based on Lowitz' discovery of the decolorizing effect in 1785, charcoal was used for the purification first of sugar. The patents of Ostrejko in 1900 opened the way for its industrial application. Already in the Bible we find the description of an adsorption experiment. The systematic research began 1773 when Scheele observed the adsorption of air by charcoal using a volumetric apparatus. The first adsorption measuring instruments were hygrometers as described by Nicholas of Cues …

Congenital undifferentiated sarcoma associated to BCOR-CCNB3 gene fusion

2017

Small round cell sarcomas are aggressive bone and soft tissue tumors that predominantly affect children and young adults. A new group of sarcomas with a recurrent BCOR-CCNB3 gene fusion has been recently identified in previously unclassifiable small round cell sarcomas. BCOR-CCNB3 sarcomas share clinical and pathologic similarities with Ewing sarcoma, but show a stronger male predilection and less aggressiveness, as well as distinct gene expression profiling and pangenomic SNP array analyses. We report the unusual case of a congenital BCOR-CCNB3 retroperitoneal sarcoma in a female born at 34th gestational week, which was diagnosed in necropsy after 21hours of life. Immunohistochemical analy…

δ 1‐OPIOID receptor‐mediated controlofacetylcholine (ACh) release in human neocortex slices

1998

In slices of human neocortex, prelabelled with [3H]-choline, the release of [3H]-acetylcholine reflects the evoked release of endogenous acetylcholine which was elicited by the same electrical stimulation paradigm. [3H]-Acetylcholine release was depressed by the delta-opioid receptor agonist D-Pen2-D-Pen5-enkephalin. When the nerve endings were depolarized by elevating extracellular potassium the evoked [3H]-acetylcholine release was similarly depressed by D-Pen2-D-Pen5-enkephalin in the absence, but not in the presence, of tetrodotoxin which blocks action potential propagation. Therefore, the delta-opioid receptor inhibiting [3H]-acetylcholine release should not be located to cholinergic n…

Oral Kaposi sarcoma development is associated with HIV viral load, CD4+ count and CD4+/CD8+ ratio.

2021

Background Kaposi’s sarcoma (KS) is an uncommon, multifocal and angioproliferative lesion, which demonstrates a poor prognosis. The aim of the present research was to explore the association of HIV viral load, CD4+ and CD8+ counts and the CD4+/CD8+ ratio on the risk of oral Kaposi’s sarcoma (KS) development. Material and Methods A total of 62 patients were retrieved from March 2008 to October 2020 from the files of two oral pathology centres. Clinical, laboratory and follow-up data were retrieved from their medical files. Poisson regression was used to explore the role of history of immunosuppression and its association with oral KS development. A P-value <0.05 was considered significant. R…

Multidirectional differentiation in a newly established human epithelioid sarcoma cell line (GRU-1) with co-expression of vimentin, cytokeratins and …

1990

A new permanent cell line (GRU-1) derived from the lymph-node metastasis of a human epithelioid sarcoma was established in tissue culture. Immunohistochemically, the original tumor had exhibited an intriguing potential for multidirectional differentiation with features of mesenchymal, epithelial and neural differentiation, evidenced by the co-expression of vimentin, cytokeratins and neurofilament proteins, respectively. This capability for multidirectional differentiation was fully preserved in the cultured cells. GRU-1 tumor cells proved to be uniformly positive for vimentin and a considerable proportion of the tumor cells exhibited a positive reaction for cytokeratins and neurofilament pr…

Weekly cisplatin with or without imatinib in advanced chordoma: A retrospective case-series analysis from the Italian Rare Cancers Network

2021

Background: To report on a retrospective case-series analysis of weekly cisplatin (wCDDP) as a single agent or combined with imatinib (wCDDP/I) in patients with advanced chordoma treated within the Italian Rare Cancer Network. Methods: Adult patients with a diagnosis of advanced, brachyury-positive chordoma, treated from April 2007 to October 2020 with wCDDP or wCDDP/I were retrospectively identified. Imatinib was withheld at the same time as wCDDP. Response according to Response Evaluation Criteria in Solid Tumors, overall survival (OS), and progression-free survival (PFS) were analyzed. Results: Thirty-three consecutive patients were identified (wCDDP as front-line n = 8 [24.2%]; wCDDP as…

Unravelling the heterogeneity of soft tissue and bone sarcoma patients’ health-related quality of life: a systematic literature review with focus on …

2020

Contains fulltext : 229532.pdf (Publisher’s version ) (Open Access) Patients with sarcoma experience many physical and psychological symptoms, adversely affecting their health-related quality of life (HRQoL). HRQoL assessment is challenging due to the diversity of the disease. This review aims to unravel the heterogeneity of HRQoL of patients with sarcoma with regard to tumour location and to summarise the used measures in research. English-language literature from four databases published between January 2000 and April 2019 was reviewed. Studies that described adult sarcoma HRQoL outcomes were included and classified according to primary sarcoma location. Eighty-seven articles met the incl…
