Ruiša pūķgalve Latvijas Universitātes Muzeja herbārijā

2020

Par Gada augu 2020 tika izvēlēts Latvijas aizsargājamais augs ruiša pūķgalve, ko Latvijā pirmo reizi atradis dabaspētnieks Eduards Lēmanis (1841 – 1902) 1883. gadā Antonopolē. Tas kopā ar citiem ruiša pūķgalves herbārija paraugiem glabājas Latvijas Universitātes Muzeja Botānikas un mikoloģijas kolekcijās. Tie ir gan Latvijā, gan Igaunijā ievākti eksemplāri laika posmā no 1848. līdz 1977. gadam.

Outcomes of aortic valve repair according to valve morphology and surgical techniques

2012

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to assess the impact of aortic valve morphology and different surgical aortic valve repair techni- ques on long-term clinical outcomes. METHODS: Between February 2003 and May 2010, 216 patients with aortic insufficiency underwent aortic valve repair in our institu- tion. Ages ranged between 26 and 82 years (mean 53 ± 15 years). Aortic valve dysfunctions, according to functional classification, were: type I in 55 patients (25.5%), type II in 126 (58.3%) and type III in 35 (16.2%). Sixty-six patients (27.7%) had a bicuspid valve. Aortic valve repair techniques included sub-commissural plasty in 138 patients, plication in 84, free-edge reinforcement in 80,…

Identifying the Unknown Content of an Ancient Egyptian Sealed Alabaster Vase from Kha and Merit’s Tomb Using Multiple Techniques and Multicomponent S…

2020

This article highlights the multianalytical study of exuded liquid from an ancient Egyptian sealed alabaster vase by Master's students in an applied chemistry for cultural heritage course. Master students are introduced to the field of Archaeometry that see the collaboration of experts in different areas of research such as conservators, curators of museums, physicists, chemists, etc. The sample is a residue exuded on the linen strip sealing an ancient Egyptian alabaster vase (inventory number S.8448) from the collection of the Museo Egizio in Turin (Italy). The students start to plan the noninvasive investigation by X-ray fluorescence (XRF), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and ener…

El nuevo escenario del orden público en el arbitraje : comentario a la STC de España, Sala Primera, núm. 17/2021, de 15 de febrero.

2021

The Constitutional Court delimits the concept and scope of public order, the requirement to state the grounds and the judicial review within the framework of the action for annulment of arbitral awards. The Constitutional Court rejects the jurisprudential line of the High Court of Justice of Madrid regarding the broadening of the concept of public policy and prevents the review of the merits of the case through the action for annulment.

Carp’s-tongue swords - morphological, metallurgical and cultural aspects

2010

This contribution discusses the results from a study of the spatial distribution of different morphological sub-groups of carp’s-tongue swords at a European scale, relating morphological types to the metallurgial make-up of the respective pieces. From this study some surprising conclusions concerning the chronological as well as the spatial dimension of the evolution of carp’s-tongue swords emerge. We also look at the degree of variability in the deposition of these artefacts and in the composition of the assemblages in question, with considerable repercussions for our understanding of the depositional contexts of metal objects in the Atlantic Bronze Age world in general.

An innovative approach to manage uncertainties and stock diversity in the EPBD cost-optimal methodology

2018

The EU Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD) 2010/31/EU is a step in the right direction to promote near zero energy buildings (NZEB) in a step-wise manner, starting with minimum energy performance and cost optimal thresholds for “reference buildings” (RBs) for each category. Nevertheless, a standard method for defining RBs does not exist, which led to a great divergence between MS in the level of detail used to define RBs for the EPBD cost-optimal analysis. Such lack of harmonisation between MS is further evident given the resulting large discrepancies in energy performance indicators even between countries having similar climate. Furthermore, discrepancies of 30% or higher betw…

Measurement of gas transport kinetics in high-frequency oscillatory ventilation (HFOV) of the lung using hyperpolarized 3He magnetic resonance imaging

2010

PURPOSE: To protect the patient with acute respiratory distress syndrome from ventilator associated lung injury (VALI) high-frequency oscillatory ventilation (HFOV) is used. Clinical experience has proven that HFOV is an efficient therapy when conventional artificial ventilation is insufficient. However, the optimal settings of HFOV parameters, eg, tidal volumes, pressure amplitudes and frequency for maximal lung protection, and efficient gas exchange are not established unambiguously. METHODS: In this work magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) with hyperpolarized (3)He was employed to visualize the redistribution of gas within the cadaver pig lung during HFOV. The saturated slice method was use…

Successful treatment of a patient with ARDS after pneumonectomy using high-frequency oscillatory ventilation.

1999

High frequency oscillatory ventilation (HFOV) was used in a patient who developed the acute respiratory distress syndrome 5 days following a right pneumonectomy for bronchogenic carcinoma. When conventional pressure-controlled ventilation failed to maintain adequate oxygenation, HFOV dramatically improved oxygenation within the first few hours of therapy. Pulmonary function and gas exchange recovered during a 10-day period of HFOV. No negative side effects were observed. Early use of HFOV may be a beneficial ventilation strategy for adults with acute pulmonary failure, even in the postoperative period after lung resection.
