Eco-physiological response of two marine bivalves to acute exposition to commercial Bt-based pesticide
2013
Microbial products based on the entomopathogenic bacterium Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) are among the most common biopesticides used worldwide to suppress insect pests in forests, horticulture and agricultural crops. Some of the effects of commercial Bt have been recorded for terrestrial and freshwater non-target organisms but little research is available on marine fauna. Nevertheless, due to the contiguity of agro-ecosystems and coastal habitats, marine fauna may be highly influenced by this control method. We studied the effect of a commercial Bt product on the physiological and ecological responses and the energy budget of two of the most frequent marine intertidal bivalves in the Mediter…
Is Citizen Science a valid tool for monitoring alien species in Marine Protected Areas?
2020
We report on our experience of NIS monitoring within the Egadi Islands MPA and at Pianosa Island National Park of Tuscan Archipelago through Citizen Science projects The Projects Caea cdacea Egadi Islands and Aliens in the Sea allowed to gather useful information on the distribution and colonisation strategies of NIS and cryptogenic species within the Egadi Islands MPA The project Percorsi nel bluBlue Paths allowed to register the first record of two cryptogenic species, Aa dacea Rang, and Pec gbbe H Milne Edwards, , at Pianosa Island As in MPAs the protection does not hinder the introduction and spreading of NIS, we expect they are likely to continue to arrive and expand in the absence of …
Integrating natural capital assessment and marine spatial planning: A case study in the Mediterranean sea
2017
Abstract Marine and coastal ecosystems are among the most productive environments in the world and their stocks of natural capital offer a bundle of vital ecosystem services. Anthropogenic pressure seriously threatens health and long-term sustainability of marine environments. For these reasons, integrated approaches capable of combining ecological and socio-economic aspects are needed to achieve nature conservation and sustainability targets. In this study, the value of natural capital of the Egadi Islands Marine Protected Area (EI-MPA) was assessed through a biophysical and trophodynamic environmental accounting model. The emergy value of both autotrophic and heterotrophic natural capital…
First record of the invasive crab Percnon gibbesi (H. Milne Edwards) at Pianosa Island: the second goal reached by the innovative Marine Citizen Scie…
2020
This study represents the second scientific goal reached by the operating Project Team and the first record of the cryptogenic species Pec gbbe H Milne Edwards, at Pianosa Island October During a Scuba survey, almost specimens of P gbbe were recorded up to a depth of m and analyzed, according to some indicators such as health state, sex, morphology, and parameters such as temperature, covering of algal species, type of rocky bottom This tropical Atlantic grapsid crab is considered as the most invasive decapod currently expanding its distribution in the Mediterranean Sea.

Sistemi di trasporto pubblico urbano via mare. Un modo per rilanciare il waterfront di Palermo
2011
New sea transport terminals can be major people movers and main centres for various urban activities and functions, determining strong social output. The city of Palermo qualifies as a prominent research territory, due to its densely urbanized and populated waterfront areas, associated with a lack of transport infrastructures and efficient transit systems to meet the mobility demand of residents and commuters. A new waterfront arrangement can improve the city image and opens the way to new urban public transport systems by sea, like ferries and hydrofoils, as an alternative to the conventional land transit systems already affected by unavoidable congestion. Plans to link by sea different de…
Madonie Smart Villages Technological Sustainable Design for Sicilian Inner Rural Areas
2022
The EU is promoting the enhancement of marginal rural areas. In the Mediterranean area, in Sicily, there is the “Madonie” District, an inner rural area with 21 municipalities suffering of depopulation and lack of work despite to their natural and architectural potentials. The pandemic situation has pointed out the necessity of a better life quality that could be guarantee with the creation of smart villages, collaborating urban centers. The purpose of the research is to enhance these territories with technological sustainable design to enable urbanization and digital innovation and to their development. Rehabilitation must be guaranteed using technologically eco-efficient strategies and fun…
Presentazione
2013
2+2=7. If the project improves its parts
2016
The International Open City Summer School of Piacenza 2015 involved the participants in the design of a spread museum of the agriculture between rural and urban areas, crossing the old town of Piacenza. The submitted project, processed in that workshop, is an occasion to call in question the different scales of the design and some linked themes like the measure, the porosity and the permeability of the architecture and the town. Within the design of the museum, the experimentation of an “intermediate scale” reached us to the need of the architecture as connection of various parts, thus to the difference between mending and making something new. At the end, the challenge is that the sum of t…
I project. Methodologies, strategies and results
2019
Every year since 2010 - between the end of August and the beginning of September - OC OPEN CITY International Summer School means a fantastic collective experience. Students (the main characters), professors, lecturers and tutors are involved in a great adventure where architecture and design build a common ground. Landscape 4.0 - the title of OC 9th edition - presents the results of the edition of the 2018. Landscape 4.0 is the landscape of sharing: sharing people, sharing ideas, sharing cultures, sharing experiences. "I Project" is a proposal of Landscape 4.0 for an abandoned military area in Piacenza (Caserma Pontieri). Landscape architecture has been considered as a plot of relations to…
