Probabilistic Logic under Coherence, Model-Theoretic Probabilistic Logic, and Default Reasoning

2001

We study probabilistic logic under the viewpoint of the coherence principle of de Finetti. In detail, we explore the relationship between coherence-based and model-theoretic probabilistic logic. Interestingly, we show that the notions of g-coherence and of g-coherent entailment can be expressed by combining notions in model-theoretic probabilistic logic with concepts from default reasoning. Crucially, we even show that probabilistic reasoning under coherence is a probabilistic generalization of default reasoning in system P. That is, we provide a new probabilistic semantics for system P, which is neither based on infinitesimal probabilities nor on atomic-bound (or also big-stepped) probabil…

Between Atoms and Humours. Lucretius' Didactic Poetry as a Model of Integrated and Bifocal Physiology

2012

Lucretius has often been regarded as one of the fathers of modern science, and also in recent years several studies have explored his influence far beyond a merely literary perspective. In this paper I analyse specifically the importance of the poet's 'eclectic' attitude in physiology from the point of view of his 'Fortleben' in early modern thought. I suggest that the typical eclectic combination of physics and biology, atomism and macroscopy, which the 'De rerum natura' shows in its didactic structure both through its images and even more through its conscious scientific reflection, built an attractive basis for attempts in the modern period at harmonising corpuscularian theories and qual…

Institutional Dynamics in International Organizations: Lessons from the Recruitment Procedures of the European External Action Service

2014

Author's version of an article in the journal: Organization Studies. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1177/0170840614544558 This article examines how organizational designs develop by proposing a novel theoretical framework that views organizational change as resulting from a dialectic process between interpretive agents. The key claim is that existing formal procedures (such as recruitment processes, our empirical focal point) are subject to involved actors’ interpretive efforts. This results in a bargaining situation based on the interpretations of the principal actors, which may induce a feedback loop whereby the original procedures are amended. The empirical re…

On the subset sum problem for finite fields

2021

Abstract Let G be the additive group of a finite field. J. Li and D. Wan determined the exact number of solutions of the subset sum problem over G, by giving an explicit formula for the number of subsets of G of prescribed size whose elements sum up to a given element of G. They also determined a closed-form expression for the case where the subsets are required to contain only nonzero elements. In this paper we give an alternative proof of the two formulas. Our argument is purely combinatorial, as in the original proof by Li and Wan, but follows a different and somehow more “natural” approach. We also indicate some new connections with coding theory and combinatorial designs.

Equivariant Triviality of Quasi-Monomial Triangular $$\mathbb{G}_{a}$$-Actions on $$\mathbb{A}^{4}$$

2014

We give a direct and self-contained proof of the fact that additive group actions on affine four-space generated by certain types of triangular derivations are translations whenever they are proper. The argument, which is based on explicit techniques, provides an illustration of the difficulties encountered and an introduction to the more abstract methods which were used recently by the authors to solve the general triangular case.

Arguing to convince: the rhetoric of scientific discourse

2016

This paper deals with scientific discourse as a rhetorical discourse from the point of view of the structure of the classical parts of oral discourse (and all kinds of discourse). The role of argumentation in discourse, with the perlocutionary goal of convincing the receiver, is studied as the foundation of the rhetorical nature of scientific discourse. A scientific treatise by Santiago Ramón y Cajal is analysed using the tools provided by rhetoric in order to prove the rhetorical nature of scientific discourse. The main contribution of this paper is to establish the crucial role of argumentation in scientific discourse and to demonstrate its permeation of the entire discourse.

El discurso y la palabra. Retórica, persuasión y neología en la narrativa española de vanguardia

2008

This book is a study on the deep changes that Spanish prose fiction underwent in the early twentieth century; a fiction conceived not as a literary product, but as a privileged place where to convey a new conception of reality, a new perception of human consciousness of the power of speech and a new conception of speech itself. In the first part, Notas marruecas de un soldado: entre vanguardia y argumantación, it is analyzed the rhetorical-discursive organization in Giménez Caballero’s novel. This part emphasizes, on the one hand, how the novel pays a constant attention to the expressive possibilities of the Castilian; and, on the other hand, how it anticipates the typical elements of Falan…

The European Round Table of Industrialists and the restructuring of European higher education

2014

The restructuring of European higher education (EHE) since the 1980s is a widely studied subject. However, this paper argues that previous studies have paid insufficient attention to the role of transnational policy-making groups in this complex and multilevel process. This argument is supported by focusing on how the European Round Table of Industrialists (ERT) has participated in this restructuring since the mid-1980s. This paper's focus is especially in two ERT documents that were published in the 1980s. The main finding is that the current restructuring of EHE reflects interests of the ERT that represents the emerging transnational capitalist class (TCC) at European level.
