Argument graph as a tool for promoting collaborative online reading

This study explored how the construction of an argument graph promotes students' collaborative online reading compared to note-taking. Upper secondary school students (n = 76) worked in pairs. The pairs were asked to search for and read source material on the Web for a joint essay and either construct an argument graph or take notes during online reading. The data consist of transcription protocols of student pairs' discussions and joint essays. Tämän pro gradu- tutkielman tarkoituksena on selvittää, millaisia mielipiteitä ruotsin kieleen hiljattain pinnalle noussut sukupuolineutraali pronomini, hen, herättää ruotsin ja suomenruotsalaisessa mediassa ja eroavatko mielipiteet maiden välillä. Lisäksi haluttiin tarkastella, mitä mieltä lingvistit ovat pronominista. Argumentit ovat vuosilta 2007-2013 ja ne kerättiin kolmesta ruotsin ja yhdestä suomenruotsalaisesta päivälehdestä. This article investigates university students’ argumentation skills in their efforts to infl uence fellow students through language. The project was implemented at the University of Kuopio and the subjects, both Finnish and foreign university students, spoke English as a lingua franca. The students were required to argue in roles either ‘for’ or ‘against’ in videotaped debates. The aim was to determine how well they managed and what problems arose. In this study the task is to point out the key features in the making of a Swedish nation from the perspective of a minority language, i.e. the Finnish speaking minority in the region of Norrbotten, Sweden. Swedish historians usually list the fear of Russia (Russia, the arch-enemy -topos) and the Laestadian movement as main reasons for the policy of cultural assimilation of the Finnish-speaking minority.
