Elites and Ecclesiastical Careers in Early Modern Sicily : Bishops, Abbots and Knights

2014

The most recent historiography has confirmed the importance of ecclesiastical careers within the ranks of the Catholic Church (bishops and cardinals) as well as religious orders (abbots and priors) and military orders (primarily the Order of Malta) for early modern family strategies. They were one of the main paths followed by cadet members of the nobility to build, strengthen and even enable the survival of the social prestige and political influence of their families. The role of the clergy was in fact crucial in performing a valuable function of mediation, especially with regard to political power in order to achieve increasingly prestigious awards (titles, offices, prebends). The aim of…

Trade apprenticeships, schooling and social differentiation in the merchant sector in fourteenth century Valencia

2020

The book explores the complex construction history of one of the main Sicilian late baroque buildings, the palace of the Celestri family, Marquis…

2002

ITALIANO: Sebbene le comunità demaniali siciliane acquisiscano un peso centrale ed inedito nei regni di Martino e di Alfonso V, a parte poche eccezioni mancano ricerche monografiche e comparate delle dinamiche sociali cittadine. ELITES AND ECCLESIASTICAL CAREERS IN EARLY MODERN SICILY: BISHOPS, ABBOTS AND KNIGHTS

2009

Most recent research on Sicilian aristocracy in early modern age has shown how the elite of the island, while keeping its reference “ideological” models in the titled nobility of feudality, was actually a very composite social group, formed by bureaucrats, lawyers, merchants, former “gabelloti” (major tenants of estates) as well as by professionals. Moreover, joining this heterogeneous aristocratic group was increasingly linked, especially since the end of the sixteenth century, to a large availability of financial resources provided by these “new nobles”. During that period, infact, due to mounting economical troubles, the Spanish monarchy actually made a widespread use of conferring – or,…

State, orders, and social distinction

2012

This essay seeks to compare different forms of the social distinction in Italy in the late Middle Ages, looking in particular at the specification of the hierarchical mechanisms and of the languages of aristocratic legitimation. In this perspective the framework of a ‘orders society’, whose issues are in part different from those of the previous centuries, correspond to the formation of the territorial states, as they emerge from the crisis of the communal cities and from the end of the unity of the “Regnum Siciliae”. The aim is to describe and analyse some of these forms in order to underscore both the common characters (beginning from those that can justify a ‘framework’, as the circulati…
