Energy saving in wastewater treatment plants: A plant-generic cooperative decision support system
2017
Abstract In Europe, the analysis of Waste Water Treatment Plants (WWTPs) shows a significant energy efficiency potential (up to 25%). Optimistically, plant managers assess their plant efficiency once or twice per year. Consequently, the time gap between an inefficiency and its detection produces avoidable operational costs. Although the installation of multiple on-line sensors can provide detailed energy information, for a human operator it is unrealistic to analyse the produced data in a satisfactory time-scale. This paper proposes a cooperative tool for energy saving that remotely accesses and evaluates WWTP databases to produce daily energy assessment reports. The novelty of this decisio…
EEG and MEG primers for tracking DBS network effects
2020
Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is an effective treatment method for a range of neurological and psychiatric disorders. It involves implantation of stimulating electrodes in a precisely guided fashion into subcortical structures and, at a later stage, chronic stimulation of these structures with an implantable pulse generator. While the DBS surgery makes it possible to both record brain activity and stimulate parts of the brain that are difficult to reach with non-invasive techniques, electroencephalography (EEG) and magnetoencephalography (MEG) provide complementary information from other brain areas, which can be used to characterize brain networks targeted through DBS. This requires, howeve…

Combining Haar Wavelet and Karhunen Loeve Transforms for Medical Images Watermarking
2014
This paper presents a novel watermarking method, applied to the medical imaging domain, used to embed the patient’s data into the corresponding image or set of images used for the diagnosis. The main objective behind the proposed technique is to perform the watermarking of the medical images in such a way that the three main attributes of the hidden information (i.e., imperceptibility, robustness, and integration rate) can be jointly ameliorated as much as possible. These attributes determine the effectiveness of the watermark, resistance to external attacks, and increase the integration rate. In order to improve the robustness, a combination of the characteristics of Discrete Wavelet and K…
A Diet for Dopaminergic Neurons?
2009
Parkinson's disease (PD) is the second most common neurodegenerative disease, which unfortunately is still fatal. Since the discovery of dopamine (DA) neuronal cell loss within the substantia nigra in PD, the past decades have seen the understanding of the pathophysiological mechanisms underlying the degenerative process advance at a very impressive rate. Nevertheless, there is at present no cure for PD. Although there are no proven therapies for prevention, a large body of evidence from animal studies has highlighted the paramount role of dietary factors in counteracting DA degeneration. Consistently, associations between the risk of developing PD and the intake of nutrients, individual fo…
Arjen kuva naistenlehdissä : arjen ajan ja paikan representaatioiden kielellistä tarkastelua vuoden 2011 Kotiliesi- ja Kotivinkki-lehdissä
2012
Tutkielma käsittelee arjen kielellisiä esittämistapoja mediatekstien kontekstissa. Työn tarkoituksena on perehtyä arjen lingvistiseen kuvaukseen kahdessa eri naistenlehdessä, Kotiliedessä ja Kotivinkissä. Arjen kuvaamisen tapoja eli representaatioita tutkiva työ on toteutettu konstruktionistisen ja diskursiivisen kielikäsityksen kehyksessä. Tutkimuksen aihe on yhteiskunnallisesti ajankohtainen ja liittyy elämäntapavalinnoista käytävään keskusteluun. Representaatioita tutkiva työ keskittyy arjen ajan ja paikan kartoittamiseen. Tutkielman keskeisimpänä tavoitteena on arjen rytmin käsitteen ympärille hahmottuvan tutkimustehtävän ratkaiseminen. Tutkimuksen keinoin on tarkoitus selvittää arjen r…

Objective. Several studies have reported that people with Parkinson’s disease (PD) perform poorly on tests of ‘Theory of Mind’ (ToM), suggesting impairment in the ability to understand and infer other people’s thoughts and feelings. However, few studies have sought to separate the processes involved in social reasoning from those involved in managing the inhibitory demands on these tests. In this study, we investigated the contribution of inhibition to ToM performance in PD. Methods. 18 PD patients and 22 age-matched healthy controls performed a ToM test that separates the ability to infer someone else’s perspective from the ability to inhibit one’s own. Participants also completed a batter…
Potential transbuccal delivery of l-DOPA methylester prodrug: stability in the environment of the oral cavity and ability to cross the mucosal tissue
2016
Levodopa (l-DOPA) is the most effective pharmacologic agent in Parkinson's disease and remains the "gold standard". Nevertheless, in long-term treatments, dyskinesias and motor complications can emerge. In this work, the combined use of l-DOPA methylester hydrochloride prodrug (LDME) with transbuccal drug delivery was supposed as a good alternative method to optimize the bioavailability of l-DOPA, to maintain constant plasma levels and to decrease the drug unwanted effects. The effects of environmental pH on buccal delivery of LDME were evaluated ex vivo. The increase of pH value from 5.8 to 6.2 implies an improvement of drug permeation. Since the pH increase causes the raising of hydrolyti…
