FROM Δηομένη TO Madonna dell’Itria... AND VICEVERSA. TWO MARIAN ICONOGRAPHIES SUPERIMPOSED IN A “PALIMPSEST WALL” OF MARSALA (TP)

During a recent restoration in an underground chapel in Marsala (TP), the wall to which the altar is attached proved to be a palimpsest of several layers. The oldest dated back from the late twelfth to early thirteenth century displaying a “velarium” in the lower register. Overhead we see a Madonna in prayer (Δηομένη) preceded by a theory of Saints. A second layer, from the 15th century, decisively changes the original iconography thus transforming it into the typically Sicilian iconography of the “Madonna dell’Itria”. El artículo propone la incorporación de los estudios sobre la visión y la memoria a la reflexión sobre el arte bajomedieval. Se aborda, con esto, la necesidad de reconsiderar el lugar desde el que se observa la producción artística entre los siglos XIII y XV, poniendo a punto el utillaje teórico que se emplea en su análisis. Visión y memoria trabajaban con la gestión de imágenes. Del mismo modo, ambas eran capacidades firmemente inscritas en la fisiología humana. Il saggio presenta alla comunità scientifica un manoscritto miniato quattrocentesco del Tesoro della Cattedrale di Monreale già noto ad Angela Daneu Lattanzi e recentemente ritrovato, attribuendone la committenza al cardinale Ausias Despuig e la paternità al miniatore francese Jacopo Ravaldi attivo a Roma. The essay presents to the scholarly community a 15th-century illuminated manuscript from the Treasury of the Cathedral of Monreale already known to Angela Daneu Lattanzi and recently rediscovered, attributing its commission to Cardinal Ausias Despuig and its authorship to the French illuminator Jacopo Ravaldi active in Rome.
