Minimally Invasive Sacroiliac Joint Arthrodesis: Experience in a Prospective Series with 24 Patients

2014

Background: Sacroiliac (SI) joint pain conservative treatments show poor outcomes. Hypothesis: surgical treatment will show better results. Patients and methods: Prospective series: 24 patients undergoing SI fusion after failure of medical treatment and showing temporary relief with SI infiltration. Period: Nov 2009-July 2013. Gender: 9/15. 11 cases bilaterally (all ). Age: 32-71 years (mean 47.4 years). Height: 161-178 cm (mean 168.2 cm). Weight: 56-84 kg (mean 68.4 kg). Etiology: 12 degenerative/spontaneous, 7 fall on buttocks, 3 coincident with lumbar disc and 2 with lumbar posterolateral fusion. Exclusion criteria: ankylosing spondylitis, osteitis condensans ilii, sacro-iliac joint arth…

Treatment of Sanders Type IV calcaneus fractures by primary arthrodesis with VIRA system

2016

The goal of this trial was to review all results of treating Sanders Type IV calcaneus fractures by primary arthrodesis with VIRA system with evolution time higher than one year. Materials and Methods: We ran an observational descriptive retrospective trial on a pool of 13 patients hospitalized in our center with diagnosis of acute fracture of intra-articular calcaneus  Sanders Type IV (total number of fractures 15), two bilateral cases,  from January 2009 to December 2013, treated with surgery by subtalar arthrodesis with VIRA System. Results: we reviewed a total of 15 fractures of calcaneus in 13 patients (2 bilateral cases), 11 men and 2 women, average age 33,84 years old (range 24-69). …

In Silico Analysis of Bone Tension During Fixation of the Medial Malleolus Fracture After Ankle Joint Endoprosthesis

2020

Total ankle arthroplasty (TAR) is a procedure alternative to arthrodesis which enables the biomechanical stabilization of the ankle joint. The procedure is associated with a high risk of complications, including fractures of the medial malleolus. In this study, the finite element method (FEM), based on CT examinations, was used to model the ankle fracture fixation after TAR. Three types of fracture stabilization were considered: screw, Blount staple, and both screw and Blount staple. In the in silico model, the maximum stress tension was found at prosthetic junctions with the base, cone, and talar components of the tibial prosthesis. When the fracture was stabilized with the Blount staple, …
