The association between the Mediterranean diet and magnetic resonance parameters for knee osteoarthritis: data from the Osteoarthritis Initiative
2018
The Mediterranean diet appears to be beneficial for osteoarthritis (OA), but the few data available regarding the association between the diet and the condition are limited to X-ray and clinical findings. The current study aimed to investigate the association between adherence to the Mediterranean diet and knee cartilage morphology, assessed using magnetic resonance (MRI) in a cohort of North American participants. Seven hundred eighty-three participants in the Osteoarthritis Initiative (59.8% females; mean age 62.3 years) in possession of a MRI assessment (a coronal 3D FLASH with Water Excitation MR sequence of the right knee) were enrolled in our cross-sectional study. Adherence to the Me…

Evaluation of a Cell-Free Collagen Type I-Based Scaffold for Articular Cartilage Regeneration in an Orthotopic Rat Model.
2020
The management of chondral defects represents a big challenge because of the limited self-healing capacity of cartilage. Many approaches in this field obtained partial satisfactory results. Cartilage tissue engineering, combining innovative scaffolds and stem cells from different sources, emerges as a promising strategy for cartilage regeneration. The aim of this study was to evaluate the capability of a cell-free collagen I-based scaffold to promote cartilaginous repair after orthotopic implantation in vivo. Articular cartilage lesions (ACL) were created at the femoropatellar groove in rat knees and cell free collagen I-based scaffolds (S) were then implanted into right knee defect for the…
Kinematics reduction applied to the comparison of highly-pronated, normal and highly-supinated feet during walking
2019
Abstract Background Kinematic analysis could help to study how variations in the static foot posture affect lower limb biomechanical function. The analysis of foot kinematics is complex because it involves managing the time-dependent joint angles in different joints and in all three planes of motion. But it could be simplified if joint angles are coordinated. Methods The kinematics of the ankle, midtarsal and metatarsophalangeal joints were registered in 20 highly-pronated, 30 normal and 20 highly-supinated subjects (assessed by the Foot Posture Index – FPI) as they walked barefoot. Coordination for each sample was analysed through principal component analysis applied to the dorsiflexion, a…
Comparison of 2 Zero-Profile Implants in the Treatment of Single-Level Cervical Spondylotic Myelopathy: A Preliminary Clinical Study of Cervical Disc…
2016
Objectives Cervical disc arthroplasty (CDA) with Discover prosthesis or anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) with Zero-P cage has been widely used in the treatment of cervical spondylotic myelopathy (CSM). However, little is known about the comparison of the 2 zero-profile implants in the treatment of single-level CSM. The aim was to compare the clinical outcomes and radiographic parameters of CDA with Discover prosthesis and ACDF with Zero-P cage for the treatment of single-level CSM. Methods A total of 128 consecutive patients who underwent 1-level CDA with Discover prosthesis or ACDF with Zero-P cage for single-level CSM between September 2009 and December 2012 were included in…
Composite variety-based topological theories
2012
Motivated by the recent result of Rodabaugh on categorical redundancy of lattice-valued bitopology, the paper considers another viewpoint on the topic, based on the notion of composite variety-based topological theory. The new concept, apart from providing a variable-basis generalization of bitopology, incorporates the most important approaches to topology currently developed in the fuzzy community, bringing forward their categorically algebraic properties, which are cleared from point-set lattice-theoretic dependencies. Dwelling on different ways of interaction between composite topology and topology, e.g., embedding the former into the latter as a full bicoreflective subcategory, we final…
The functional and radiographic outcomes following distal radius fracture treatment in a cast for 4 and 6 weeks in the elderly: A randomized trial.
2022
Background. The optimal duration of cast immobilization following distal radius fractures (DRFs) in elderly patients has not been established. Objectives. To assess the functional and radiological parameters following DRF treatment in elderly patients using 2 different periods of cast immobilization. Materials and methods. We assessed 50 patients (33 women and 17 men). The mean age at the beginning of treatment was 71 years. The mean duration of follow-up was 1 year and 3 months. One subgroup (n = 26) included patients treated with a cast for 4 weeks, whereas the other subgroup (n = 24) included patients treated with a cast for 6 weeks. The following measures were assessed: union rate, radi…
Factors Affecting Flutter Kicking Speed in Women Who Are Competitive and Recreational Swimmers
2009
The purpose of this study was to determine the relationships between possible predictive measures of a 50 m front crawl swimming and a 22.86 m flutter kicking speed. Ten women who were National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I collegiate swimmers and 10 women who were recreational swimmers (mean +/- SD = 20.6 +/- 1.6 years; 66.7 +/- 10.3 kg; 166.7 +/- 8.8 cm) volunteered for the study. Anthropometric measures were obtained including height, leg length, lower leg length, and foot length. Ankle flexibility was assessed by measuring ankle plantar flexion and ankle inversion. Lower body power was measured using a vertical jump. Swimming and kicking speed were measured as the time to c…
Brancati su Pirandello e il pirandellismo
2019
Predicting the failure in distal femur fractures.
2018
Abstract Introduction The incidence of nonunion after fractures of the distal femur is up to 6%. The distal femoral nonunion is a disabling disease that needs complex steps in his treatment. Aim of our study is to find predicting factors of non-unions. Materials and methods We retrospectively analyzed 116 cases of distal femoral fractures and 20 cases of non-unions. In both surgeries we analyzed: accuracy of reduction, stability of fixation, hardware used, residual medial or lateral bone defect, use of autologous or heterologous bone grafts. Results Malreduction, particularly axial defect, associated with unbalanced fixation, and a medial cortical bone defect of greater or lesser extent wer…
