Information Decomposition in Bivariate Systems: Theory and Application to Cardiorespiratory Dynamics

2015

In the framework of information dynamics, the temporal evolution of coupled systems can be studied by decomposing the predictive information about an assigned target system into amounts quantifying the information stored inside the system and the information transferred to it. While information storage and transfer are computed through the known self-entropy (SE) and transfer entropy (TE), an alternative decomposition evidences the so-called cross entropy (CE) and conditional SE (cSE), quantifying the cross information and internal information of the target system, respectively. This study presents a thorough evaluation of SE, TE, CE and cSE as quantities related to the causal statistical s…

Solid State Joining of Thin Hybrid Sandwiches Made of Steel and Polymer: a Feasibility Study

2020

Abstract The growing demand for more environmentally friendly vehicles has led to an increased use of light materials in the transportation industry with the aim to reduce structural weight, fuel consumption, and gas emissions, thereby boosting cost-effectiveness and recyclable properties. Complex multi-material steel-based components would allow to improve mechanical properties and minimize weight even further. In particular, new sandwich materials made by steel outer skins and a polymeric internal layer seems very promising for obtaining mechanical performance and lightness at the same time. Unfortunately, traditional welding techniques, like arc welding, laser welding, and resistance spo…

Enzyme class identification in cleaning products by hydrolysis followed by derivatization with o-phthaldialdehyde, HPLC and linear discriminant analy…

2008

The enzymes present in raw materials of the cleaning industry (enzyme industrial concentrates) and in household cleaners were isolated by precipitation with acetone and hydrolyzed with HCl. The resulting amino acids were derivatized with o-phthaldialdehyde, and the derivatives were separated by HPLC. The peaks of 14 amino acids were observed using a C18 column and a multi-segmented gradient of acetonitrile-water in the presence of a 5 mM citric/citrate buffer of pH 6.5. Using either normalized peak areas (divided by the sum of the peak areas of the chromatogram) or ratios of pairs of peak areas as predictor variables, linear discriminant analysis models, capable of predicting the enzyme cla…

A Solution to the Problem of the Maximal Number of Symbols for Biomolecular Computer

2019

The authors present a solution to the problem of generating the maximum possible number of symbols for a biomolecular computer using restriction enzyme BbvI and ligase as the hardware, and transition molecules built of double-stranded DNA as the software. The presented solution offers an answer to the open question, in the algorithm form, of the maximal number of symbols for a biomolecular computer that makes use of the restriction enzyme BbvI.

Design of a customized pattern for improving color constancy across camera and illumination changes

2010

International audience; This paper adresses the problem of color constancy on a large image database acquired with varying digital cameras and lighting conditions. Automatic white balance control proposed by an available commercial camera is not sufficient to provide reproducible color classification. A device-independent color representation may be obtained by applying a chromatic adaptation transform, from a calibrated color checker pattern included in the field of view. Instead of using the standard Macbeth color checker, we suggest to select judicious colors to design a customized pattern from contextual information. A comparative study demonstrates that this approach insures a stronger…

A methodological approach to exploring the rhythm of classroom discourse in a cumulative frame in science teaching

2014

The purpose of this study was to characterise the nature and purpose of different types of classroom discourse and to explore how the rhythm of classroom discourse provides a cumulative frame for the teaching of science. The overall data consisted of a teaching sequence of eight lessons on the moment of force as taught to physiotherapy students at a Finnish University of Applied Sciences. Our in-depth multiple timescale analysis of two episodes illustrated in this study shows examples how cumulation was instantiated by the different types of classroom discourse. The methodology and findings of this study have implications both for teacher education and further research. peerReviewed

A gearbox model for processing large volumes of data by using pipeline systems encapsulated into virtual containers

2020

Software pipelines enable organizations to chain applications for adding value to contents (e.g., confidentially, reliability, and integrity) before either sharing them with partners or sending them to the cloud. However, the pipeline components add overhead when processing large volumes of data, which can become critical in real-world scenarios. This paper presents a gearbox model for processing large volumes of data by using pipeline systems encapsulated into virtual containers. In this model, the gears represent applications, whereas gearboxes represent software pipelines. This model was implemented as a collaborative system that automatically performs Gear up (by using parallel patterns…

The Three Steps of Clustering in the Post-Genomic Era: A Synopsis

2011

Clustering is one of the most well known activities in scientific investigation and the object of research in many disciplines, ranging from Statistics to Computer Science. Following Handl et al., it can be summarized as a three step process: (a) choice of a distance function; (b) choice of a clustering algorithm; (c) choice of a validation method. Although such a purist approach to clustering is hardly seen in many areas of science, genomic data require that level of attention, if inferences made from cluster analysis have to be of some relevance to biomedical research. Unfortunately, the high dimensionality of the data and their noisy nature makes cluster analysis of genomic data particul…

Responsible cognitive digital clones as decision-makers: A design science research study

2022

This study uses a design science research methodology to develop and evaluate the Pi-Mind agent, an information technology artefact that acts as a responsible, resilient, ubiquitous cognitive clone – or a digital copy – and an autonomous representative of a human decision-maker. Pi-Mind agents can learn the decision-making capabilities of their “donors” in a specific training environment based on generative adversarial networks. A trained clone can be used by a decision-maker as an additional resource for one’s own cognitive enhancement, as an autonomous representative, or even as a replacement when appropriate. The assumption regarding this approach is as follows: when someone was forced t…
