Participation in the public debate constitutes one of the most evident avenues for political scientists to demonstrate the social relevance of the discipline. This article focuses on two questions: the types of roles political scientists adopt in their public interventions and the potential tensions between their public engagement and the epistemic norms regulating academic and research activities. Research on handicrafts has generally concentrated on the study of urban artisans and guilds. However, not all artisans operated in towns, nor were rural artisans always small marginal groups. For instance, the majority of Finnish artisans lived and worked in the countryside. They had the right to take on apprentices; therefore, most rural artisans received their training from artisans working in the same environment. This article characterizes apprentices in the early nineteenth century in Finland and studies how rural artisans organized their occupational training. With the emergence of manufacturing based economies, specialised productions take on new dimensions during the Neolithic. Production networks progressively develop during the Neolithic and the Metal Ages and can be characterised according to their scale, how they are organised, the status of producers and the intensification of the trade of manufactured goods. National audience; L'artisan nous intéresse ici comme un acteur des savoirs. Notre position universitaire n'est pas neutre, il existe une tension entre ces deux mondes dont le chercheur doit tenir compte : comment se présente l'artisan comme acteur des savoirs dans le regard des chercheurs ? Quel est le regard des artisans sur eux-mêmes et par contraste sur les chercheurs en sciences humaines et sociales comme acteurs des savoirs ? Nous proposons un jeu de miroir sur ces représentations sociales, avant d'examiner deux formes de médiation possibles. Ces expériences nous invitent à envisager un rapport aux savoirs repéré dans la figure hybride de "l'artisan-chercheur".
