Equality according to whom? Debating an age-related restriction in the upcoming disability legislation reform in Finland
2020
Within many countries, the policies of disability and old age have been developing on distinct paths. Even though the prevalence of disability is higher in older populations, older persons tend to be excluded from disability discourses. Taking Finland's disability service legislation reform as an example, this article elaborates on the justifications for excluding or including older persons from disability policies. The paper analyses the public statements given in 2017 to a proposal that introduced an age-related restriction to disability services in order to understand how the restriction is argued for and against, and what kind of conceptualisations of old age and disability the statemen…
Choice models in nordic long-term care : care managers' experiences of privilege and disadvantage among older adults
2022
AbstractConsumer choice models have been introduced in eldercare services in several Western welfare societies. Choice models in eldercare emphasise the importance of individuals’ abilities to make informed choices and therefore entail a risk for increased inequalities among older adults with care needs. In the Nordic countries, such inequality risks are in stark contrast to universal policy ambitions of equal access to care services. Care managers, who are responsible for needs assessment for eldercare services, have a central role in implementing policies and, thus, have first-hand experience of their impact on older adults’ access to care. The aim of this study was to explore care manage…
National-Level Wealth Inequality and Socioeconomic Inequality in Adolescent Mental Well-Being: A Time Series Analysis of 17 Countries

Purpose: Although previous research has established a positive association between national income inequality and socioeconomic inequalities in adolescent health, very little is known about the extent to which national-level wealth inequalities (i.e., accumulated financial resources) are associated with these inequalities in health. Therefore, this study examined the association between national wealth inequality and income inequality and socioeconomic inequality in adolescents' mental well-being at the aggregated level. Methods: Data were from 17 countries participating in three consecutive waves (2010, 2014, and 2018) of the cross-sectional Health Behaviour in School-aged Children study. …

Yliopiston suuntaa etsimässä
2022
Vuoden 2010 alussa toteutettu Suomen yliopistokenttää ravistellut yliopistouudistus aiheutti aikanaan kiivasta keskustelua. Yhtäältä uudistusta puolustettiin vetoamalla yliopistojen autonomian lisääntymiseen ja kilpailukyvyn parantumiseen, toisaalta uudistus nähtiin yliopistodemokratian horjuttamisena ja keskitetyn ylhäältä alaspäin suuntautuvan top-down-hallinnon lisääntymisenä. Professori Thomas Wilhelmsson toimi uudistuksen aikana Helsingin yliopiston rehtorina ja hänen muistelmansa sekä arvionsa koskien yliopistouudistusta on julkaistu Gaudeamukselta. Kirja tarjoaa sisäpiirin perspektiivin yliopistouudistukseen ja tekee kiinnostavan syväluotauksen yhden keskeisimmän yliopistouudistuksen…
