A Randomized Controlled Trial Protocol for Using an Accelerometer-Smartphone Application Intervention to Increase Physical Activity and Improve Healt…
2021
Physical activity is beneficial for improving health and reducing sick leave absences. This article describes a protocol for an intervention using an interactive accelerometer smartphone application, telephone counselling, and physical activity recordings to increase the physical activity of workers in the military and improve their health. Under the protocol, employees from six military brigades in Finland will be randomly assigned to intervention and control groups. The intervention group’s participants will use accelerometers to measure their daily physical activities and their quality of sleep for six months. They will receive feedback based on these measurements via a smartphone applic…
Odd triplet superconductivity induced by a moving condensate
2020
It has been commonly accepted that a magnetic field suppresses superconductivity by inducing the ordered motion of Cooper pairs. We demonstrate that a magnetic field can instead provide a generation of superconducting correlations by inducing the motion of a superconducting condensate. This effect arises in superconductor/ferromagnet heterostructures in the presence of Rashba spin-orbital coupling. We predict the odd-frequency spin-triplet superconducting correlations called the Berezinskii order to be switched on at large distances from the superconductor/ferromagnet interface by the application of a magnetic field. This is shown to result in the unusual behavior of Josephson effect and lo…
Electron-phonon interaction in flat-band superconductivity
2017
Tasovyöllä elektronien dispersio on erittäin heikko, jolloin tilatiheys on tavanomaista suurempi. Tämän takia suprajohtavuus tasovyöllä on tavanomaista voimakkaampi silloin kun elektronien välinen vetovoima on heikko. Eliashbergin teoria on elektroni–fononi-suprajohtavuuden teoria, joka ottaa luonnollisella tavalla fononien äärellisen nopeuden huomioon elektronien välisessä vuorovaikutuksessa. Pohjustuksena tasovyösuprajohtavuuteen perehdyn Eliashbergin teoriaan ensi…
Sustainable Art for Sustainable Cities: A Performance and a Screening Afternoon at EDRA50 Brooklyn
2019
On the occasion of EDRA50 Brooklyn, held at NYU Tandon School of Engineering and devoted to the topic of “Sustainable Urban Environments: Research, Design and Planning for the Next 50 Years”, it was decided that a collateral program of sustainable art activities could widely enrich the conference impact and scope. Furthermore, it provided an interesting opportunity for conference attendees, mostly involved in the fields of research, education and planning, to discover projects or ideas that spring from creative practice and evaluate emerging trends such as the visual arts devoted to sustainability.
Arm Space Decomposition as a Strategy for Tackling Large Scale Multi-armed Bandit Problems
2013
Recent multi-armed bandit based optimization schemes provide near-optimal balancing of arm exploration against arm exploitation, allowing the optimal arm to be identified with probability arbitrarily close to unity. However, the convergence speed drops dramatically as the number of bandit arms grows large, simply because singling out the optimal arm requires experimentation with all of the available arms. Furthermore, effective exploration and exploitation typically demands computational resources that grow linearly with the number of arms. Although the former problem can be remedied to some degree when prior knowledge about arm correlation is available, the latter problem persists. In this…
How to Improve the Reliability of Chord?
2008
In this paper we focus on Chord P2P protocol and we study the process of unexpected departures of nodes from this system. Each of such departures may effect in losing any information and in classical versions of this protocol the probability of losing some information is proportional to the quantity of information put into this system. This effect can be partially solved by gathering in the protocol multiple copies (replicas) of information. The replication mechanism was proposed by many authors. We present a detailed analysis of one variant of blind replication and show that this solution only partially solves the problem. Next we propose two less obvious modifications of the Chord protoco…
Multiparametric Rational Solutions of Order N to the KPI Equation and the Explicit Case of Order 3
2021
We present multiparametric rational solutions to the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili equation (KPI). These solutions of order N depend on 2N − 2 real parameters. Explicit expressions of the solutions at order 3 are given. They can be expressed as a quotient of a polynomial of degree 2N(N +1)−2 in x, y and t by a polynomial of degree 2N(N +1) in x, y and t, depending on 2N − 2 real parameters. We study the patterns of their modulus in the (x,y) plane for different values of time t and parameters.
Evaluation of asset replacement strategies considering economic cycles: lessons from the machinery rental business
2015
Contains fulltext : 144492.pdf (Publisher’s version ) (Open Access) In businesses with heavy capital investments, the effective management of assets is crucial, in particular in the fleet rental business where assets are the major source of revenues. One important question in this regard concerns the replacement of used assets and the purchase of new assets. Thus, the objective of this study is to evaluate performance effects of asset replacement strategies. In order to maximise net cash flow of a rental company for construction machinery, a range of scenarios investigating the timing and nature of policies for replacing the fleet are analysed. Simulation findings are then discussed to gene…
Twister Tries
2015
Many commonly used data-mining techniques utilized across research fields perform poorly when used for large data sets. Sequential agglomerative hierarchical non-overlapping clustering is one technique for which the algorithms’ scaling properties prohibit clustering of a large amount of items. Besides the unfavorable time complexity of O(n 2 ), these algorithms have a space complexity of O(n 2 ), which can be reduced to O(n) if the time complexity is allowed to rise to O(n 2 log2 n). In this paper, we propose the use of locality-sensitive hashing combined with a novel data structure called twister tries to provide an approximate clustering for average linkage. Our approach requires only lin…
