Effective Field Theory and Lattice QCD approaches for hard probes in QCD matter

Hard Probes are an essential tool to discover the properties of the quark-gluon plasma created in heavy-ion collisions. The study of hard probes always involves taking into account very different energy scales, and this is precisely the situation in which Effective Fields Theories (EFTs) are useful. EFTs can be used to separate the short-distance and perturbative physics from the long-distance and non-perturbative. This method combined with Lattice QCD evaluations of the long-distance effects can provide accurate and first principles results. In this proceeding, I will report recent advances in this direction. Atomic Structures of Two Novel Immunoglobulin-like Domain Pairs in the Actin Cross-linking Protein Filamin

Filamins are actin filament cross-linking proteins composed of an N-terminal actin-binding domain and 24 immunoglobulin-like domains (IgFLNs). Filamins interact with numerous proteins, including the cytoplasmic domains of plasma membrane signaling and cell adhesion receptors. Thereby filamins mechanically and functionally link the cell membrane to the cytoskeleton. Most of the interactions have been mapped to the C-terminal IgFLNs 16–24. Similarly, as with the previously known compact domain pair of IgFLNa20–21, the two-domain fragments IgFLNa16–17 and IgFLNa18–19 were more compact in small angle x-ray scattering analysis than would be expected for two independent domains. Blastic plasmacytoid dendritic cell neoplasm (BPDCN) is a rare disease of controversial origin recently recognized as a neoplasm deriving from plasmacytoid dendritic cells (pDCs). Nevertheless, it remains an orphan tumor with obscure biology and dismal prognosis. Understanding the conditions for successful control of phytoplankton by zooplankton in eutrophic ecosystems is a highly important research area with a wide implementation of mathematical modelling. Theoretical models generally predict destabilisation of food webs in eutrophic environments with large-amplitude oscillations of population densities which would eventually result in species extinction. In this paper we demonstrate that the size distribution of the world income may be reasonably approximated by a log-normal distribution rather then by a power law, as has previously been believed. This result has been shown to be quite persistent as we move from 1985 to 2011.

Experimental investigation of low-frequency pulsed Lorentz force influence on the motion of Galinstan melt

Abstract The paper presents the results of the numerical and physical experiments, aimed at assessing the influence of pulsed force of electromagnetic field on the melt motion and the fluid velocities. The experiment was performed on the eutectic alloy Galinstan in the cylindrical volume, where an ultrasonic Doppler velocimeter was employed for velocity measurements under conditions of pulsed and steady EM field application. A numerical simulation of the melt flow, forced by the steady EM force, involved a 2D axisymmetric model. The k-e turbulence model was used to obtain the information about the melt velocities. High-frequency electrodeless discharges in helium

Modelling of high-frequency electrodeless discharges (HFEDs) in helium is presented. The model combines calculations of electromagnetic field profiles and plasma parameters including kinetics of the excited atomic states. A method of the self-consistent numerical solution for the plasma?field system is proposed. The method takes into account a temporal hierarchy of the kinetic processes in the HFED plasma.
