Free and sulfoconjugated dehydroepiandrosterone, cyclic adenosine-3′,5′-monophosphate, and free estriol in maternal and cord blood

1976

When free DHEA, its sulfatide, and sulfate were assayed in maternal plasma as well as in umbilical cord arterial and venous plasma, rather high concentrations were found in either fraction from cord arterial plasma, reflecting the fetal contribution not only of free DHEA and DHEA sulfate, but also of the lipophile steroid sulfatide. Since high DHEA levels were associated with elevated c-AMP concentrations, a certain interrelationship of both parameters is indicated. In the course of delivery, a rapid decrease of free estriol in maternal plasma was observed. Higher concentration of free estriol in umbilical venous plasma pointed at its placental biosynthesis from fetal precursors.

Update to the ASFA guidelines on the use of therapeutic apheresis in ANCA‐associated vasculitis

2020

Since 1986, the American Society for Apheresis (ASFA) has published practice guidelines on the use of therapeutic apheresis in the Journal of Clinical Apheresis (JCA) Special Issue. Since 2007, updated guidelines have been published every 3 years to reflect current evidence based apheresis practice with the most recent edition (8th) published in 2019. With each edition, the guidelines are reviewed and updated based on any newly published literature since the last review. The PEXIVAS study, an international, randomized controlled trial comparing therapeutic plasma exchange (TPE) vs no TPE and standard vs reduced dose steroid regimen on the primary composite outcome of end stage renal disease…

Caplacizumab prevents refractoriness and mortality in acquired thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura: integrated analysis

2021

Abstract The efficacy and safety of caplacizumab in individuals with acquired thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (aTTP) have been established in the phase 2 TITAN and phase 3 HERCULES trials. Integrated analysis of data from both trials was conducted to increase statistical power for assessing treatment differences in efficacy and safety outcomes. Caplacizumab was associated with a significant reduction in the number of deaths (0 vs 4; P < .05) and a significantly lower incidence of refractory TTP (0 vs 8; P < .05) vs placebo during the treatment period. Consistent with the individual trials, treatment with caplacizumab resulted in a faster time to platelet count response (ha…

Management of the Sponataneous Bleeding Episodes in Factor VII Deficiency. A Prospective Evaluation of the STER,

2011

Abstract Abstract 3368 Introduction Patients with an inherited factor VII (FVII) deficiency may display a wide range of clinical phenotypes, from an asymptomatic condition to serious hemorrhagic episodes such as fatal central nervous system (CNS) or gastrointestinal (GI) bleeds (Mariani G et al. Thromb Haemost 2005; 93: 481–7). Symptomatic patients can be divided into two major categories: those with mild-to-moderate bleeding tendency and individuals with a severe bleeding tendency which may be more severe than that in hemophilia. The former group mainly experience mucosal bleeding, a clinical picture that mimics that of a platelet disorder and often does not call for treatment. In contrast…
