Dynamic DNA Origami Devices

2018

DNA nanotechnology provides an excellent foundation for diverse nanoscale structures that can be used in various bioapplications and materials research. Among all existing DNA assembly techniques, DNA origami proves to be the most robust one for creating custom nanoshapes. Since its invention in 2006, building from the bottom up using DNA advanced drastically, and therefore, more and more complex DNA-based systems became accessible. So far, the vast majority of the demonstrated DNA origami frameworks are static by nature; however, there also exist dynamic DNA origami devices that are increasingly coming into view. In this review, we discuss DNA origami nanostructures that exhibit controlled…

Self-assembly of catalytically-active supramolecular coordination compounds within metal-organic frameworks

2019

[EN] Supramolecular coordination compounds (SCCs) represent the power of coordination chemistry methodologies to self-assemble discrete architectures with targeted properties. SCCs are generally synthesized in solution, with isolated fully coordinated metal atoms as structural nodes, thus severely limited as metal-based catalysts. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) show unique features to act as chemical nanoreactors for the in situ synthesis and stabilization of otherwise not accessible functional species. Here, we present the self-assembly of Pd-II SCCs within the confined space of a pre-formed MOF (SCCs@MOF) and its post-assembly metalation to give a Pd-II-Au-III supra molecular assembly, c…

Hierarchical Structuring in Block Copolymer Nanocomposites through Two Phase-Separation Processes Operating on Different Time Scales

2013

Tailoring the size and surface chemistry of nanoparticles allows one to control their position in a block copolymer, but this is usually limited to one-dimensional distribution across domains. Here, the hierarchical assembly of poly(ethylene oxide)-stabilized gold nanoparticles (Au-PEO) into hexagonally packed clusters inside mesostructured ultrathin films of polystyrene-block-poly(methyl methacrylate) (PS-b-PMMA) is described. A close examination of the structural evolution at different nanoparticle filling fractions and PEO ligand molecular weights suggests that the mechanism leading to this structure-within-structure is the existence of two phase separation processes operating on differe…

Wood-inhabiting fungal communities : Opportunities for integration of empirical and theoretical community ecology

2022

Publisher Copyright: © 2021 The Author The interest in studying wood-inhabiting fungal communities has grown in recent years. This interest has mainly been motivated by the important roles of wood-inhabiting fungi in ecosystem functioning (e.g. nutrient cycling) and conservation biology (e.g. their sensitivity to forest management). In this paper, I argue that another important, but yet largely unexplored motivation for studying wood-inhabiting fungal communities, is their potential to advance fundamental community ecology. One major advantage of wood-inhabiting fungi as model systems is that they are organized as spatially well-defined metacommunities, thus conforming to the assumptions of…

Unzipping Nucleoside Channels by Means of Alcohol Disassembly

2013

Gold nanoparticles capped with simple adenosine derivatives can form colloidal aggregates in nonpolar solvents. Theoretical calculations indicate the formation of organic channels by the supramolecular assembly of the nanoparticles by means of hydrogen bonds between the adenine moieties. The aggregates were only negligibly sensitive to nPrOH, iPrOH, and tBuOH, whereas some showed a similar response to MeOH and EtOH, and others showed high selectivity toward MeOH. DNA nucleoside derivatives (1-(2-deoxy-β-D-ribofuranosyl)-5-methyluracil and 2′,3′-O-isopropylideneadenosine) as well as thymine and other aromatic compounds such as pyrene derivatives (pyrene, 1-chloropyrene, 1-hydroxypyrene, (1-p…

Deciphering Biotic Interactions and Their Role in Soil Microbial Community Assembly and Functions

2022

Microbial communities play a key role in ecosystem functioning as well as in plant, animal, and human welfare. Their assembly relies on different processes commonly referred to as abiotic and biotic filters. Despite the widespread emphasis on abiotic filters in terrestrial ecosystems, a growing body of evidence suggests that interactions between microorganisms play a critical role in community assembly. However, the contribution of these interactions to microbial community assembly and the factors influencing them have not been clearly established. In most cases, biotic interactions between microorganisms have been investigated based on cocultures of a handful of strains, completely overloo…

Direct sequencing of human gut virome fractions obtained by flow cytometry

2015

The sequence assembly of the human gut virome encounters several difficulties. A high proportion of human and bacterial matches is detected in purified viral samples. Viral DNA extraction results in a low DNA concentration, which does not reach the minimal limit required for sequencing library preparation. Therefore, the viromes are usually enriched by whole genome amplification, which is, however, prone to the development of chimeras and amplification bias. In addition, as there is a very wide diversity of gut viral species, very extensive sequencing efforts must be made for the assembling of whole viral genomes. We present an approach to improve human gut virome assembly by employing a mo…

An evolutionary approach to multi-objective scheduling of mixed model assembly lines

1999

In this paper a multi-objective genetic algorithm for the scheduling of a mixed model assembly line is proposed, pursuing the line stop time minimisation together with the component usage smoothing. Specific features of the developed GA are step by step random selection of diversified crossover and mutation operators, population control for the substitution of duplicate chromosomes, and in-process updating of GA control parameters. Three different formulation of the fitness function were been tested with some distinct line configurations.
