Training Psychiatry Residents in Descriptive Psychopathology: A Systematic Review

2021

Purpose: Descriptive psychopathology (DP, sometimes called psychopathology or phenomenology) is the language of psychiatry and is dedicated to the description of mental symptoms. Due to its importance, there is an ongoing case to put it back at the heart of psychiatry and its training. This study seeks to examine the literature on how to train psychiatry residents in DP, including reported educational interventions and educational methods. Method: The authors conducted a systematic review following the PRISMA and BEME guidelines to identify literature on how to train psychiatry residents in DP. In May 2019, they sea…

Assessment and management of agitation in psychiatry: Expert consensus

2016

International audience; BACKGROUND:Psychomotor agitation is associated with different psychiatric conditions and represents an important issue in psychiatry. Current recommendations on agitation in psychiatry are not univocal. Actually, an improper assessment and management may result in unnecessary coercive or sedative treatments. A thorough and balanced review plus an expert consensus can guide assessment and treatment decisions.METHODS:An expert task force iteratively developed consensus using the Delphi method. Initial survey items were based on systematic review of the literature. Subsequent surveys included new, re-worded or re-rated items.RESULTS:Out of 2175 papers assessing psychomo…

Current role of the chimney technique in the treatment of complex abdominal aortic pathologies: A position paper from the PERICLES Registry investiga…

2020

Historically, chimney/snorkel endovascular aortic repair (Ch-EVAR) emerged as a rescue technique to revascularize and/or preserve inadvertently covered critical branch vessels during infrarenal aortic endografting. Next, in its evolutionary path, Ch-EVAR offered a viable treatment option for complex aortic repair, and particularly in situations where fenestrated/ branched EVAR was not a therapeutic option due to the lack of availability and/or anatomical constraints. In this context, this technique offered distinct advantages such as off-the-shelf availability, straightforward implantation techniques, and lower resource use-intensity enabling performance by a large number of operators manag…

Impact of the environment on the health: From theory to practice

2021

The Erice 56 Charter titled "Impact of the environment on the health: from theory to practice" was unanimously approved at the end of the 56th course of the "International School of Epidemiology and Preventive Medicine G. D'Alessandro" held from 3th to 7th November 2019 in Erice - Sicily (Italy) and promoted by the Study Group of "Environment and Health" of the Italian Society of Hygiene, Preventive Medicine and Public Health. The course, that included lectures, open discussions and guided working groups, was aimed to provide a general training on epidemiological and toxicological aspects of the environmental health impact, to be used by public health professionals for risk assessment, with…

Calculating confidence intervals for impact numbers

2006

Abstract Background Standard effect measures such as risk difference and attributable risk are frequently used in epidemiological studies and public health research to describe the effect of exposures. Recently, so-called impact numbers have been proposed, which express the population impact of exposures in form of specific person or case numbers. To describe estimation uncertainty, it is necessary to calculate confidence intervals for these new effect measures. In this paper, we present methods to calculate confidence intervals for the new impact numbers in the situation of cohort studies. Methods Beside the exposure impact number (EIN), which is equivalent to the well-known number needed …

Ergonomic Risk Assessment of Dental Students—RULA Applied to Objective Kinematic Data

2021

Musculoskeletal disorder (MSD) is already prevalent in dental students despite their young age and the short duration of dental practice. The current findings state that the causes of MSD are related to posture during dental work. This study aims to investigate the ergonomic risk of dental students. In order to analyze the ergonomic risk of dental students, 3D motion analyses were performed with inertial sensors during the performance of standardized dental activities. For this purpose, 15 dental students and 15 dental assistant trainees (all right-handed) were measured in a team. Data were analyzed using the Rapid Upper Limb Assessment (RULA), which was modified to evaluate objective data.…

Efficacy and Safety of IQYMUNE®, a Ten Percent Intravenous Immunoglobulin in Adult Patients With Chronic, Primary Immune Thrombocytopenia

2018

Background: Intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) IQYMUNE® is a highly purified 10% IVIG that was assessed using the new stringent definition of response described in the revised guideline on the clinical investigation of IVIG. The efficacy and the safety of IQYMUNE® were investigated in adult patients with chronic primary immune thrombocytopenia (ITP). Methods: In this phase III multinational, multicentre, prospective, uncontrolled, open-label, single-arm study, adult patients with a baseline platelet count < 30 × 10 9 /L were treated with IVIG 10% at a dose of 2 g/kg body weight administered over 2 consecutive days. The primary endpoint was Response over the study period and was defined accor…

A Classification System for Decision-Making in the Management of Patients with Chronic Conditions

2021

Patients with chronic diseases are frequent users of healthcare services. The systematic use of stratification tools and predictive models for this group of patients can be useful for health professionals in decision-making processes. The aim of this study was to design two new classifier systems for detecting the risk of hospital admission for elderly patients with chronic conditions. In this retrospective cohort study, a set of variables related to hospital admission for patients with chronic conditions was obtained through focus groups, a health database analysis and statistical processing. To predict the probability of admission from the set of predictor variables, a logistic regression…

Social Learning among Transplant Event Volunteers

2019

Volunteering in adapted sports competitions has not been studied as much as in other competitions. Survey data from volunteers in a supportive role at the European Transplant Sport Week 2016 in Finland were analysed to report the way involvement in the event increased knowledge of transplantation. Through social learning theory, the aim of the study was to report the associations between changes in knowledge, training and volunteering experience of supportive role volunteers. A representative sample of the adult volunteers (n=95, Male=35, Female=60; Disabled=31, non-Disabled=64; Mage=49.7y old, SD=16.8) responded to a web-based survey. Questions included self-perceived knowledge of transpla…

Cannabis for Cognitive Enhancement as a New Coping Strategy? Results From a Survey of Students at Four Universities in Germany

2016

Cognitive Enhancement (CE) is often discussed in relation to stimulant drugs, such as amphetamines (AMPH). However, there is some evidence that cannabis (CAN) can be used for CE.This study compares the knowledge, prevalence, and perceived effects of and factors associated with the knowledge of or use of CAN versus AMPH for CE among undergraduate students at four German universities.A survey was taken of 1,538 students at four German universities. It investigated their knowledge and use of CAN and AMPH for CE as well as associated factors. Descriptive and analytic (Mann-Whitney-U test, Fisher's exact test, logistic regression) statistics were obtained using SPSS.Responses were obtained from …
