Malignant melanoma of the oral cavity. Review of the literature and experience in a Peruvian Population
2012
Objective: To determine the epidemiological profile of malignant melanoma cases treated at the National Institute for Neoplastic Diseases “Dr. Eduardo Caceres Graziani” (INEN) over the period 1952 to 2008. Study Design: All clinical records with complete data of patients presenting a histopathological diagnosis of malignant melanoma of the oral cavity were reviewed. Data such as age, gender, location, tumor size, disease length, presence of metastasis, treatment received and year of admission were recorded. Results: During the study period 97 cases were found. The average age of patients was 52.85±1.6 years old mostly between 50 and 59 years old; the predominant gender was the female. The m…
Selective approach to the treatment of oesophageal cancer
1996
Abstract Between September 1985 and December 1994, 322 patients with oesophageal cancer were treated. Of the 190 patients who underwent operation, 173 had an oesophageal resection; in 124 this was performed as an abdominothoracic resection and in 49 by the transhiatal approach. The assessment of radicality after histological examination revealed a curative (R0) resection in 121 patients (70 per cent) and a palliative (R1-R2) resection in 52 (30 per cent). Prognosis was correlated with the extent of mediastinal lymph node dissection. In 77 patients with stage pT1–3 pN0–1 pM0 the 5-year survival rate was 40 per cent after abdominothoracic resection with two-field lymph node dissection and zer…
Exocrine Pancreatic Function and Fat Malabsorption in Human Immunodeficiency Virus-Infected Patients
1999
BACKGROUND: Nutrients malabsorption frequently occurs in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected patients, but very few studies have investigated exocrine pancreatic digestive capacity in these patients. We therefore evaluated the frequency of exocrine pancreatic impairment and its eventual relation with fat malabsorption in HIV-infected patients. METHODS: Thirty-five HIV-infected patients (30 male, 5 female: mean age +/- standard deviation, 33.6 +/- 7.2 years) and 51 sex- and age-matched controls without gastroenterologic diseases were studied. In all subjects fecal elastase 1 (EL-1) was assayed, and fecal fat excretion was evaluated with the steatocrit test. RESULTS: Nineteen of 35 (5…
The Applicability of a Checklist for the Diagnosis and Treatment of Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency: Results of the Italian Exocrine Pancreatic Ins…
2020
Objective To evaluate a rapid checklist capable of identifying exocrine pancreatic insufficiency in outpatients. Methods Prospective observational study of a multicenter cohort. Results One hundred and two patients were enrolled; 61.8% of the patients had medically-treated benign or malignant pancreatic disease, and 38.2% had a pancreatic resection. Visual examination of the feces was evaluated in 84 patients and it was related to steatorrhea in 51 patients (50.0%). Receiver operating characteristic curves were evaluated for each symptom or clinical sign and four of them (ie, increase in daily bowel movements, number of bowel movements, fatty stools, >10% weight loss) had a satisfactory …
Histopathological grading systems analysis of oral squamous cell carcinomas of young patients
2016
Background: To analyze the clinicopathological profile of young patients (≤ 40 years) with oral SCC and correlate with a control group (≥ 50 years) by means of histopathological grading systems. Material and Methods: 14 young patients and 14 control patients were selected with similar clinical stage and tumor location. Demographic and clinical data were obtained from patient records and histological sections were evaluated according to four histopathological grading systems. Associations between categories of demographic and clinical data were performed through Chi-square test and Exact Fisher test. The survival analyzes were performed according to the Kaplan-Meier method. Results: The comp…
Soluble intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (s-ICAM-1/s-CD54) in diffuse large B-cell lymphoma: association with clinical characteristics and outcome
2003
Background: High serum levels of soluble intercellular adhesion molecule-1(s-ICAM-1/s-CD54) have been associated with adverse clinical features and poor outcome in chronic lymphocytic leukemia, Hodgkin’s disease and non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, but their value in the different subtypes of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma has not been well addressed. Patients and methods: Our aim was to study the serum levels of s-ICAM-1 in diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) and to correlate them with clinical characteristics and outcome. We analyzed the serum levels of s-ICAM-1 in a series of 55 patients with DLBCL diagnosed in a single institution. s-ICAM-1 levels were quantified by an immunoenzymatic assay. Median ag…
Clinicopathological analysis of 1571 cutaneous malignant melanomas in Valencia, Spain: factors related to tumour thickness.
2006
Epidemiological studies on cutaneous melanoma in Mediterranean countries are scarce. Our aim was to perform a descriptive analysis of melanoma cases diagnosed in Valencia, Spain, and to evaluate the relationship between Breslow thickness and some clinical features. A total of 1571 patients with histologically confirmed cutaneous malignant melanoma diagnosed at the two main referral melanoma centres were evaluated retrospectively. For each patient the following clinical and pathological characteristics were selected: age, gender, anatomic site, histogenetic type, Breslow thickness, presence of ulceration, the stage, and symptoms such as bleeding, changes in size and colour, altered sensation…

Radiological analysis, operative management and functional outcome of open book pelvic lesions: a 13-year cohort study.
2011
Abstract We present the clinical and radiological outcome of a 13-year cohort study of 38 open book pelvic lesions. All patients were treated in one Level I Trauma centre. In the posterior pelvis, sacro-iliac diastasis was seen in 31 patients, sacral fracture in 7. In all patients with sacro-iliac diastasis, the pubic bone was inferiorly displaced on the primary ap pelvic overview on the side of injury. All but one patient was treated with open reduction and internal fixation of the symphysis pubis. Additional stabilization of the posterior pelvis was done in 9 patients. 32 patients were seen after a median follow up of 84 months. Majeed score and SF-36 questionnaire were used. Functional o…
