Cell death and oxidative stress in gliomas.

In gliomas, apoptosis and necrosis are determined by a number of promoting and inhibiting factors including oxidative cell stress mediated by nitric oxide synthases (NOS) and reduced by superoxide dismutases. Therefore, in 46 gliomas (including astrocytomas, oligodendrogliomas, oligo-astrocytomas, and glioblastomas), the relationship of apoptosis and necrosis and the expression of apoptosis-promoting (p53, bax, Fas, Fas-L) and inhibiting (bcl-2) factors as well as of different isoforms of NOS (NOSb, NOSe, NOSi) and manganese superoxide dismutase (MnSOD) were studied. Surgical treatment of posterior fossa tumors in infancy and childhood: techniques and results

In a collective of 72 children with tumors of the posterior fossa, the preoperative diagnosis, operation planning and performance, and use of additional procedures, like the preliminary ventricular drainage and interventriculostomy are described. The extent of intra- and postoperative complications is given. Postoperative lethality was 0% in the group operated on between 1979 and 1991. The responsible factors are discussed. The findings support the opinion of ALBRIGHT (1989) that the prognosis for such patients is most promising in the hands of a specialist in pediatric neurosurgery.

The course of intracranial pressure and volume-pressure relationships following extirpation of meningiomas and astrocytomas

Thirty-five patients with meningiomas were compared with 37 patients with astrocytomas with respect to the postoperative course of their ICP and elastance. In the case of the meningioma patients, the ICP increased on average over a longer period and achieved higher values than in the astrocytoma patients. In the first group, the elastance attained values that were three times as high as in the second group. There was no fixed relationship between pressure and elastance in the two groups of patients.

The role of computed tomography in the diagnosis of brain tumors in infants and children.

CT has considerably facilitated the diagnosis of intracranial tumors, especially in infants and children. The authors review their experience with a series of 260 children with proven brain tumors. In most cases CT is so conclusive that other diagnostic techniques are no longer often needed. Pneumoencephalography in particular has largely been replaced by CT in recent years in the authors' departments, and the frequency of central ventriculography with contrast material has decreased substantially. Postoperative neurosonography was performed in 69 babies and children after osteoclastic neurosurgery for primary cerebral tumors. Astrocytoma of the posterior fossa (26 cases) and medulloblastoma (25 cases) were frequent histological findings. Isolation of Abiotrophia adiacens from a brain abscess which developed in a patient after neurosurgery.

ABSTRACT We report the case of a patient who developed a large brain abscess after neurosurgery. Cerebrospinal fluid from the abscess drainage yielded Abiotrophia adiacens -specific PCR products and microorganisms that were identified by conventional microbiological methods and by 16S ribosomal DNA analysis as Abiotrophia adiacens , which was formerly classified as a member of nutritionally variant streptococci.

High-grade gliomas (HGGs) are the most frequent primary malignant brain tumors in adults, which lead to death within two years of diagnosis. Maximal safe resection of malignant gliomas as the first step of multimodal therapy is an accepted goal in malignant glioma surgery. Expression of Transketolase-like 1 and Activation of Akt in Grade IV Glioblastomas Compared With Grades II and III Astrocytic Gliomas

Transketolases link the Embden-Meyerhof pathway to the pentose phosphate pathway. An influence of p-Akt on this metabolism was described. This study was performed to compare the expression of transketolase-like 1 (TKTL1) and p-Akt in glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) and other astrocytic gliomas (AGs, grades II and III).
