Pedro Sánchez Ciruelo. A Commentary on Sacrobosco’s Tractatus de sphaera with a Defense of Astrology
2020
AbstractThis paper focuses on the figure of the Spanish scholar Pedro Sánchez Ciruelo (ca. 1470–1548), who published a commentary on Johannes de Sacrobosco’s Sphaera in 1498. The aim of this study is to analyze the defense of astrology that Ciruelo prepared for the preface of his commentary in order to show that this praise of astrology represents a significant part of the scholar’s intellectual interests, which remained constant throughout his career. It is possible to get a richer understanding of Ciruelo’s defenses of astrology in several of his works by placing them in their own specific context: the first one in the context of the prohibition of Simon de Phares’s activities in Paris in…
Bartomeu de Tresbens, metge i astròleg de Pere el Cerimomiós : aproximació biogràfica i diplomatari
2019
The Chevroches zodiacal cap and its Burgundy relations
2009
AbstractThe excavation of an unexplored secondary agglomeration in Chevroches (France), from 2001 to 2002 has led to the discovery of a bronze dome of a type unknown in the Ancient world. It is inscribed with three lines in Greek transcribing Egyptian and Roman months, and the twelve signs of the Zodiac. This paper presents the first observations and some other finds from similar objects in Burgundy.
Balance as Symbol and Object of Art
2014
The symbolic use of the balance is reviewed, covering mythology and religion, icons and arts, its use in astronomy and astrology as well as in literature and music. In Old Egypt many paintings show men’s height balances symbolically used for soul weighing. In Greece the fate balance was known. In the Roman Empire the symbolic use changed to justice fairness, and legitimacy of coins and this holds until modern time. In the Bible and the Koran fair weighing in trade are demanded. In the Book of Revelation the balance is symbol for misery. Michael archangel became guide of the deceased to the last judgement and weighed the poor sinner against his good deeds. In the witch balance the mass of th…
Revised orbital parameters of the accreting millisecond pulsar SAX J1808.4-3658
2005
We present temporal analysis of the three outbursts of the X-ray millisecond pulsar SAX J1808.4-3658 that occurred in 1998, 2000 and 2002. With a technique that uses the chi^2 obtained with an epoch folding search to discriminate between different possible orbital solutions, we find an unique solution valid over the whole five years period for which high temporal resolution data are available. We revise the estimate of the orbital period, P_orb =7249.1569(1) s and reduce the corresponding error by one order of magnitude with respect to that previously reported. Moreover we report the first constraint on the orbital period derivative, -6.6 x 10^-12 < Pdot < +0.8 x 10^-12 s/s. These val…
