Career development and transitions of athletes : the International Society of Sport Psychology Position Stand Revisited

2020

This paper is a comprehensive update of the International Society of Sport Psychology (ISSP) Position Stand on career development and transitions of athletes issued a decade ago (Stambulova, Alfermann, Statler, & Côté, 2009, ISSP Position Stand: Career development and transitions of athletes. International Journal of Sport and Exercise Psychology, 7, 395–412.). A need for updating the 2009 Position Stand has grown out of the increasing inconsistency between its popularity and high citation, on the one hand, and its dated content that inadequately reflects the current status of athlete career research and assistance, on the other. During the last decade, sport psychology career scholars work…

Perceived motivational climate influences athletes’ emotion regulation strategies, emotions, and psychobiosocial experiences

2022

The purpose of the study was to investigate whether athletes’ perceptions about the motivational climate created by their coach influence emotion regulation strategies (i.e., cognitive reappraisal and expressive suppression), emotions, and psychobiosocial experiences of athletes. A sample of 459 competitive athletes (201 women, 258 men), aged 16–35 years, drawn from individual and team sports, completed self-assessment measures of perceived motivational climate, emotion regulation, sport emotions, and psychobiosocial experiences. Main results from structural equation modeling showed that perceived mastery climate was positively related to cognitive reappraisal, pleasant emotions, and psycho…

An exploration of the psychological immune system in Hungarian gymnasts

2014

Elite athletes’ participation in sports is oftentimes associated with considerable physical and psychosocial stressors as it requires a continuous strive for success in a highly competitive environment. Coping has been identified as an extremely influential factor in an athlete’s life, affecting both the performance and satisfaction of the individual. Its effectiveness is determined by various potentials of the personality that provide the necessary resources when dealing with stressful situations. The multidimensional Psychological Immune System (PIS) model integrates 16 of such personal resilience resources that provide immunity against stress. The purpose of the study was to examine the …

Acute effects of fatigue to strength and power variables in edurance trained athletes

2015

The purpose of this bachelor thesis was to investigate how fatigue affects strength and power in endurance trained athletes. This thesis is written for the athletes, coaches and researchers in the field of sport. Total of 7 endurance athletes (age 23.3 years ± 1.3, height 174.7 cm ± 6.4, weight 66.5 kg ± 8.4) volunteered for the study, 4 male and 3 female. Hypotheses were that measured variables do not decrease after fatiguing protocol and that the potentiation may counteract fatigue. Fatigue was induced in a continuous maximal treadmill running, where speed was increased every five minutes by one km/h. When necessary, after 45 minutes of running, speed was increased every minute by one km/…

ISSP position stand : Transnationalism, mobility, and acculturation in and through sport

2017

The historically unprecedented pace of internationalising sport industry and transnational movement of athletic talent in the last 20 years has heightened the need for developing new competencies in research and daily practice of sport psychology professionals. While academic literature in cultural sport psychology and praxis has been increasing, sport professionals and local organisations seem to give scant time and resources to stay abreast of complex social changes in transnational industry and to the development of cultural competencies. Stemming from the continuing need for qualified athletic personnel to support transitioning athletes and to achieve intercultural effectiveness in dail…

The Impact of the Progressive Efficiency Test on a Rowing Ergometer on White Blood Cells Distribution and Clinical Chemistry Changes in Paralympic Ro…

2017

Abstract There is a large gap in knowledge regarding research on post-exercise blood changes in disabled athletes. There are relatively few data on adaptive mechanisms to exercise in disabled athletes, including disabled rowers. Two rowers from a Polish adaptive rowing settle TAMix2x that qualified for the Paralympic Games in Rio, 2016 took part in this study. They performed a progressive test on a rowing ergometer until exhaustion. The cardiorespiratory fitness measures, complete blood count, white blood cells’ distribution and 30 clinical chemistry variables describing laboratory diagnostic profiles and general health were determined. The extreme effort induced changes in all studied meta…

Psychological and behavioural factors of unintentional doping: A preliminary systematic review

2018

In some cases, doping in sport is an intentional goal-directed behaviour, but research suggests that it might also occur accidentally when athletes inadvertently or unintentionally consume banned performance-enhancing drugs via food, supplements, or medication. Because research into the psychological factors of unintentional doping is still emerging, this paper aims to conduct a preliminary systematic review of all the existing literature concerning the psychology of unintentional doping in sport. The systematic review was carried out via an extensive search of Medline, PsycINFO, PsycTESTS, PsycARTICLES, and Web of Science, and reports from World Anti-Doping Agency. Among the 2110 articles …

‘I was excited to train, so I didn’t have problems with the coach’: dual career athletes’ experiences of (dis)empowering motivational climates

2019

In addition to investing in athletic development, adolescent elite athletes are expected to complete their secondary education. As a result of this expectation and the demands of sport and education, they may struggle to sustain high levels of motivation for both domains. Grounded in theoretical tenets of empowering coaching, this study sought to explore student–athletes’ perceptions of empowering and disempowering motivational climates and their possible implications for athletes’ dual career experiences. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 17 Finnish student–athletes, and the data were thematically analysed. The analysis indicated that a majority of the athletes had experiences…

Exploring the Life Form of a Student Athlete Afforded by a Dual Career Development Environment in Finland

2020

The current paper introduces a case study conducted in one of the most well-established athletic talent development environments in Finland, with the focus on the environment’s ecological dynamics and organizational culture, in light of its recent effort to rebrand itself as a dual career development environment. Our analysis has been inspired by the holistic ecological approach and ecological dynamics, wherein the authors have considered a dual career development environment from the point of view of its transactions with agentic individuals and affordances for student athletes in the study domain, the sports domain, and the private domain. The authors believe our findings can provide othe…
